Do you think long hair (on your head that is) gives you credability as a guitarist? Can you be taken seriously or be considered a genius if you have short hair?

How many other guitarists here have short hair, stand up and be counted?
Any hair stories?
Consider it a hair debate?

God I'm bored :(

I started losing my hair when I was 19. I'll soon be 25 and I keep it about 1/4" long.

Here's my schtick: The girls see some skinny little dude with a babyface and a bald head walking up onto stage with a japanese strat and a fender combo amp and think "Wow he must have a huge Dick!"

Isn't Satriani still bald? I take him seriousally. Oh, and Clapton and Keaggy are both losing it all too. I like Phil's take of wearing a beret...cool:)

If you're talking about the young "rockers"...I take none of them seriousally.

Seriously

My hair used to be down to my ass. I swear that when I cut it, my guitar skills began dramatically diminishing.

lol! Great thread.

I was a hair GOD from 8th grade until 2nd year of college. At one point it was down to my waist. i started losing my hair pretty early on and shaved it nearly bald since I was 21. Now I cut it every 2 weeks with clippers (no attachments, sometimes a #1). It is quite liberating and I save like 2 hours a day not having to comb and dry it. Tell you the truth, I feel like so much more of a baddass now with no hair :D . Chicks seem to dig it just as much as long hair -- in fact, my fiance HATES the pictures with long hair.

Most of the musicians I play with or go see have short hair, many bald ones. makes me feel good! It seems across most music styles these days there is at least 1 bald/ short haired person in a band. In fact, sometimes I play with this bass player who shaves his head and has a goatee and glasses (as do I) and I joke that their can only be one bald/goateed/bespeckled guy on stage at a time. hee hee

 -- seems to be a good symbol for this thread

I dont play NOWHERE near as good as when I had long hair....but it has nothing to do with the hair in my case...back then, I ate slept, shit, did practically everything with my guitar....I swear I played at least 6-8 hours a day....now, if I play an hour a day thats alot...oh well.....

Here's one of my favorite quotes - this thread just seemed to bring it to mind...

"The real lost souls don't wear their hair long and play guitars. They have crew cuts, trained minds, sign on for research in biological warfare, and never give their parents a moments worry" - J.B. Priestly

Yupper. Same here. Cut hair, got a great job. Now I own tons more equipment but can't play as well as when I was poor and only owned one guitar and amp.

My chops have suffered but my ear and taste in music have DRAMATICALLY improved. I'll take that trade off! Plus I am very rarely called "Miss" these days.

I used to practice like 4-6 hours a day and now it is about 1-2 hours week days, 2-3 on the weekend. However, the 4 years of only an hour a week between 1994 and 1998 really took their toll.

does anyone know how mullets affect guitar playing?? I dont have enough refrigerators on my front porch to grow one and find out for myself:D

man, if i could grow an afro i would have the biggest one around. you are a lucky man.

I was joking, I'm some nerdy white guy! Like an American Bruce!

I don't know if it's the hair, but I just grew mine back after 5 years of being clean cut. My playing is improving more since the hair passed 10 inches, and the amount of time I spend practicing has gone up, I guess it is the hair....I am just a headbanger after all, it doesn't "feel" right to play without the hair. Hair VS Talent? in my case I think hair improves my talent. But I guess if your not a headbanger, it doesn't matter. Joe Satriani was a really good example, hell Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden has short hair now, it doesn't affect his performance, then again he's getting paid to perform.

O.K. so I'm undecided, I think it helps ME to feel right playing, maybe not YOU.

Hair gets more chicks...whether you can play or not!:D

You've either got to have hair down to your ass, or be completely bald. Anything in between would be like Bryan Adams or some other pussy.

1. With a Mullet, you'll tend to play Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, and Other music that "Mulletheads" prefer.

2. You'll also think that you're way better than you actually are.

3. You constantly say,"Hey Man, WATCH THIS!"
