When guitar players play live and say they have a really good amp like a Mesa and a really good reverb unit what is the typical signal chain?

Is it situation:
1) the amp is miked and sent into the mixing desk and then the mic'd signal is sent out to the reverb unit.

OR

2) the reverb unit is hooked up via the FX loop of the amp and so the reverbed sound comes out of the amp's speaker?

OR

3) something else.

I know this is a recording forum but I think the principals apply to recording too.

I do believe that the signal chain will work either way.

Of course it will. I just wondered what was the most common way.

When guys in here record guitars say which are intended to hav big reverb do they record the guitar with no reverb and add it later or it is part of the original guitar sound?

Yo Chemical Agent #33:

Since I'm not a guitar player, [just some chords etc.], I'm not sure. When I record my synth, I have some reverb piped into the headset for aesthetic purposes, it sounds nice. However, I add the reverb when I mix down. I do put in some guitar solos but they are done on the synth.

Most all the vocalists who record here enjoy the reverb in their headset when they sing; however, I add the "real" reverb when I mix down.

I would hazard a guess that most folks add reverb when they mix down if they are using a studio. Live performances could include the reverb if they are recorded live and, more could be added at the studio.

I'll take a Laphroig neat.
