Hello, I appreciate your response to this in advance.

I'm looking for any reccomendations on how I'm looking to set my computer up. I pretty much will just be doing guitar and vocals into the computer. Don't really have a need for very extensive outputs from a soundcard as I'm probably be putting everything to CD. A few outs and headphones would be good.
Something with 1/4" jacks would be good, on a soundcard. If not possible, going down to a split RCA is fine (I do that now, just don't have a decent sound card)

Any soundcard that could be reccomended? I'm hoping to do this soon, hopefully anything/everything I need could be bought for under $300. I have seen this card, and read decent reviews of M Audio: M-Audio Delta DiO 2496
Any reccomendation on a preamp or mixer or whatever would be good. Already have software, but definatly in need of a new soundcard.

Thanks again, it's appreciated.

you will find pretty much unanimous support for the Audiophile 2496 card here (the one you mention). For a mixer with that setup, and to stay under $300 total, I would recommend a Behringer mixer, either the Eurorack MX802A or the MXB1002. They will give you all the necessary ins, phantom power, two aux sends (which are critical to get stereo recording or to use the two ins on the AP2496 card). The 1002 has channel inserts available too, which help a lot. Some people will jump in and say Behringer is crap, but they are the best thing for the money. Mackie and Neve are heads and shoulders above Behringer, no question, but you pay heavily for that improvement. It is easy enough to upgrade later on anyway, as you will spend a fair amount of time learning how to do everything anyway: the Behringer will not be the weak link in your chain for at least a couple of years.

I currently use the MX602A, and would love to upgrade to the 1002, as the 602A only has one aux send and no channel inserts, but it has got the job done very well for me in this early phase as I learn about tracking/editing/mixing.

{edited to add:} also worth checking into the UB series of mixers by Behringer, as they supposedly have better mic preamps, but I have no first hand experience with these mixers.

Welcome to the board, mgchicago. FYI, this topic has been asked thousands time here. You better have a search on other threads. For hints :
Follow this link for good soundcard...

Many people happy to use Audiophile 2496, Terratec EWX 2496, Delta 2496, and many more "2496" out there... just stay away from Creative's SB liners... :D

Thanks. I'd read some other related threads and will check them out. I've been playing guitar and singing for around 10 years, recording has never really been anything I've put much time into, but as I'm now getting songs together for my band and for solo music I do, I need a better set up to start working some songs out and such.

Thanks again,

Michael

Did you say Cakewalk ?

...then go to Cakewalk Forum up this one. You'll see many friendly members keep talking there instead of makin' music :D Catch ya there...

cstockdale,

Thanks, I've looked at the 2496 on guitarvision.com (There are two versions, one is $150 - http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7...17114858807/g=rec/search/detail/base_id/52393

and one is $119 - http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7...17114858807/g=rec/search/detail/base_id/52399

I can obviously see the difference in the two, but I'm wondering which one makes more sense.
If I were getting the mx802a mixer, does it matter which sound card I'd choose. Certainly the one for $150 has more with it.

Thanks for the help. I'm hoping to get this going this weekend, girlfriend is out of town so a bit of time on my hands. Hoping I can find this at a store here in the city. Any other suggestions on what I may need is appreciated-cables, etc. I have all the guitar stuff I could possibly need so nothing needed as far as getting to the mixer.
