I am seriously considering buying a guitar synthesizer for the purpose of adding stringed orchestra sounds to my guitar
recordings. Is there one out there at around the $500 to $600 range that can acually duplicate the sound of, for example, violins and cellos without sounding too "synthetic"?

I have a GR09 - which is several years old, I have used a GR30 with decent results. I havn't priced guitar synths in a while but I suspect you could get a used GR09 in the $200 range (maybe less) and maybe a used GR30 in the your $500 range (check out Ebay to get a general idea on costs. However, if you need to buy the actual GK-2a converter - that's another $300??? new.

Roland has always had pretty decent string sounds (even in thier older synths).

I use the guitar synth to get more realistic tecnique, certain sounds like strings, banjo, horns, etc can actually be played more realistic on a guitar than on a keyboard.
