Death Metal Freak
Anyone have any suggestions on guitar picks? I have been using some basic/standard guitar picks for a while but want to try something different. I play death metal so ther is allot of fast down picking.

Any suggestions?

It ain't death metal unless you use the tooth of a virgin sacrifice.

Jim Dunlop xl series jazz III. Thats da text in my favorite pick.
small, thick, and the text gives texture to grip.
Black-metal is tooth of a virgin,
to Gore fits a scalpel of a surgeon.
Easy-listening played with rose petal,
Use a scythe for Death-Metal.

..I need to renew my presciptions...

Go with the Jim Dunlop Jouni's talking about, try out some different sizes, like 1mm, 2mm, 3mm whatever suits your fingertips. But these pics are particularly good because the are very pointy which helps for fast picking, and are think so you can hold on to them very well while playing fast. Good luck.

Thank you...

DAVA master control and stainless steel tipped picks. Rubber grip and small tip...just the way I like it.

I use Jim Dunlop USA Nylon .73mm. They're the ones that come in different shades of grey for the different strengths. I like them because they don't disintegrate while you're playing.

i'm with IronFlippy...... those are my personal fav. they wont fall apart, but they still got a lil bitta give to 'em.

Dunlops are my favorites as well, typically 1 mm but I'll trade off with .73 mm if I need a lighter attack. Dunlops are the best to grip because of their texture.

I use polished stone picks for practice and most other stuff. I aso use 1.52mm plasic picks and Fender White zx Heavey.

There are some occations when I must use Fender mediums and I hate them, but they are needed to get a particular sound.

My advise? Go to a fender heavy and stay there.

I used to like the 88 nylons, but Idon't like the way they get that fuzz on the edge as they wear. The scratchiness bugs me. I started using the green tortex picks a long time ago and like them the best. I buy a bunch at a time and then saturate my environment with them. If I need one, and there isn't one in my pocket, there is one in my car seat or the ashtray or the lint basket of the dryer or in the silverware drawer.

I use them for a long time. They get a twist to them and the pointy end will wear down so you can't tell it from the other corners.

I agree with the martian about the tone of the fender medium picks. For some reason, acoustic guitars sound better when strummed with a lighter pick - especially a plastic one (versus the weird tortex compound).

Man, that little fuzz on the edge sucks. I file it down with a nail file just to rid myself of that travesty.

I use the Dunlop Gator Grip 1.5 mm.
I can't really tell you why they are better than anything else, they just feel better to me.
I've been thinking about trying out the Jazz III picks. Everybody that uses them says they kick so much ass I wouldn't believe it. I'm gonna pick some up soon.

I like George L picks but can't often find them. You can really grip them, but they are not too hard.

Other than that I usually stick with the Dunlop 0.60mm I break too many strings playing rhythm with a really stiff pick.

Sometimes I go with the Dunlop Stubby's or Wedge .73mm if I want a harder pick for lead.

Thin beach stones work in a pinch...but wear your strings and make stone dust!

That's my weapon of choice right there! I actually like it when they get the fuzz on the edge because it gives the sound just that little extra bit of texture. Heck, sometimes I'll turn the pick around and use the textured grip side on the strings for the raspyness it gives.
