I'm trying to record a guitar using the headphone out of my Marshall G15RCD amp into the line in of my SB Live. I am not able to record in stereo using the line in. Even if I plug the guitar cable directly into the SB Live, I still get mono. However, the mic input does record in stereo.

I'm confused about this. Can anyone let me know what I need to do to record my guitar in stero? Will I need to run it first through something that outputs stereo?

Thanks!!!!

Um...guitar cables are mono. The reason you're getting "stereo" when you plug into the mic input is that the mic input splits the mono signal into both the left & right channels. It's not *really* stereo.

Anyway, what you need is a stereo cable that's 1/4" stereo on one end and 1/8" stereo on the other end. Then you connect one end to the headphone out of your amp and the other to the line in on your soundcard (never use mic in). Note that you're basically going to end up with a mono track that's twice as big as it has to be (the same information in both channels).

When I record from mono sources, I typically just deal with the fact that I can only monitor it in one channel. After it's recorded, the recording software will allow me to pan the mono track wherever I'd like it. Go download n-Track from http://www.fasoft.com and have fun.
