whats the best mic to record a guitar amp or amps for an album..do i need something better than an sm-57...thanx..

No, but having about 6 mics placed all over the place doesn't hurt either.

Some of the biggest studios use 57s for guitar ans bass. Like Sonus said having a few to fool around with placement and blending the different qualities isnt a bad Idea.

on the other hand i find myself using mics that are usually not thought of for guitar all the time so, if it sounds good it doesnt matter. You know, if it isnt broke dont fix it.

if you are having trouble with a sound and your using a 57 my best guess would be that its your equipment or the placement so try different positions and make sure you have equipment thats good before you even wory about getting a professoinal sound.

i just bought an sm-57 yesterday...sounds .is there anything else i can juice it up with besides comp. or eq. ..i spread out the guitars but when testing it back alone 1 mono track it doesn't seem to have presents through the speakers...should i be hearing it through monitors instead of headphones when getting a sound?thanx

Listening to the track through monitors will give you a far more _accurate_ representation of the sound, so from there you should be able to better tweak the sound to your taste.

Headphones aren't generally as good (but of course are a lot cheaper to buy) - but there are some decent headphones on the market that will do a reasonable job of mimicing the sound (Problem is, off the top of my head, I can never remember the model numbers etc. - they are around $100 to buy)

It also dpends on the sound you are going for. I personally dont like the 57 for a *clean* guitar tone, an Sennheiser 421 or a condensor mic works for me.

But if you want a really good dirty tone, I think the 57 is the way to go. good luck

Not only should you listen through good monitors but you should also try layering it if its a distorted sound.

I believe you said your listening to it mono so you would have to listen stereo for this to work but doubling the guitar part and panning them hard left and right is a way to thicken the sound and make it sound alot fuller.
