Guitar interface advice?

I have recently decided to start recording on my lap top (previously I have used a Yamaha AW16G, but it keeps picking up unwanted buzz from, I think, some nearby, overhead power cables), so I bought a 1/4inch jack to 1/8 jack to see if I could record guitar through the mic socket on my laptop. Apart from the delay (which I had expected) this approach resulted in a massive amount of hiss. My question is this: if I were to invest in one of the popular guitar interfaces available (say Cake walk or pro-tools guitar), is it likely that I would be able to record my much laboured over guitar instrumentals with out masses of unwanted noise?

Any tips would be appreciated.

Probably.
I've been happy with my Focusrite Scarlett 8i6. Loved it so much, I sold it to a friend and upgraded to the 18i6 (I needed more inputs). Very solid, easy to use, worth the money.
They even make a 2i2 with 2 inputs and 2 outputs. Worth checking in to.

Cakewalk and ProTools are not interfaces, they are DAWs (software).

I assume you are recording an electric guitar? Are you using any amp emulation software (GuitarRig, PodFarm, Gearbox etc)? You need a device which converts the audio signal to digital - an audio interface, but you need to get one that has a preamp in it for direct instrument.
