I have a friend who has a Crystal onboard soundcard on his p2 400 running winME, CWPA9. He is DI'ing his guitar directly into his computer's mic input for a clean sound. The problem is that even with the mic input turned almost all the way down the clean sound distorts and peaks. The boost is not on. I've tried changing setting and am unable to get it to work. Any suggestions??? If all else fails I'm going to try to install and older soundblaster soundcard I have lying around and see if it works. Anyone have any other suggestions???

Thanx in advance

Dude have you amped the signal or not? you're asking for trouble using the mic input of any kind of consumer soundcard, and if its onboard, well, ummm...

Do you have a line input and an amp? that would at least be better, Di'ng the guitar into the card is bad news.

Definitely. Never use the mic input at all - they're horrible. Best bet is either:

A) Guitar --> Guitar Amp ..then
Microphone on the amp --> preamp or mixer --> line in

--or--

B) Guitar --> effects box --> line in

If you're recording clean, I'd go with (B).

The Input controls on your soundcard do not actually adjust the input level. You need to control the level with the output of the guitar.

Good advice from everyone. Your best bet for direct recording is a POD or Jstation.

The worst sound related computer problems i have ever had were because of crystal soundcards.

I have six sitting in a box somewhere...no five, i have one under my table leg keeping it balaced.

Whatever happens i would go with the SB. Good luck.
