Hi,

Im looking for a pair of mics to record vocals and acoustic guitar. I would also like to record elec guitar via an amp occassionaly, although this is less important. I dont really want to spend too much on the kit as its only for some home studio recording.

I was considering 2 MXL603s but then I have no good vocal mics. So what i thought is how about using a MXL603s and a Studio Projects B1 microphone?

Would it work out well using 2 different mics to record acoustic guitar at the same time in some sort of configuration? That way it would save me getting 3 mics?

Thanks
James

Nobody seems to know!

I was also wondering how two B1's would perform on an acoustic guitar? as good as the MXL603s? as they are nearly £40 cheaper each!

Absolutely a good place to start. Both quality mics and great bang for the buck.

Start there, learn how to place them to get the very best recordings out of them you can and then once you've gotten your feet wet you can start thinking about more expensive stuff.

BTW, you will need some kind of mic pre or mixer that has phantom power for those.

Hi, thanks for the reply,

How important is it when recording acoustic guitar to have a "stereo" setup, with 2 identical mics... I dont think it is a good idea to spend 100 on the MXL603 and 60 on the B1 if it turns out the B1 is better for acoustics and vocals and im stuck with a MXL i dont use! Do you think the MXL would be great on its own for Acoustic guitar?

I use it often and it's great (matched mk012's) I also use two different mics(GT 1B & 4033 or baby bottle and NTK and I like those combos too. Stick a mic at the twelfth fret about 18" away pointing at the soundhole and one next to your ear pointing at the same place. then pan 'em to 10:00 and 2:00 in the mix. It can be sweet

MXL has a combo pack of the 603 with a 2003 at a good price. The 2003 is a good choice if you like a bright and detailed LD condenser. It depends on your voice.

Jimarick,

I use a pair of matched Rhode NT5 for acoustic guitar and a Shure Beta 87A for vocals with excellent results. I connect them in a Sytek pre-amp (4 channels with phantom-power) and then directly to my sound card.
