I recently got a LINE6 FLEXTONE III-plus combo amp. I got it because I am planning to do some gigging. At home I have a POD pro. I was happy with the POD for recording purposes.

Anyway, after working extensively with the pricey flextone for about a week, I find that it works well at low volumes. I am able to get some sustain and good distortion. Good fluidity, makes it easy to play fast shredding or riffs.

However, if i put the volume above 9 O'clock position, then the amp sounds different. THe dsitortion is less, sustain is less. The sound has got tighter.

I am thinkin about returning this amp. Anyone have any suggestions? I know many combo amps have this characteristic. But I nenver expected it from this pricey amp. Any other combos you can recommend which will play well at high volumes?

I am considering a Head. But don't have the funds. I was layed off from work a few months ago.

Thanks in advance.

If you are going Deigital then I suggest the Fender CyberDeluxe. The stereo one.

What you are experiencing is tube envy.

Get a tube amp and life will be good again.

I was trying to be polite, but that is what I really wanted to say :D

OK, I agree.
I can return this thing if I can find something. Any recommendations for a Tube head or PA with speakers for under $1000.00? Something I can go to GC and try out.

I have a POD Pro which perhaps I can connect to.

There is NO conecting of digital mumbo jumbo to the sacred tube.

Seriously get what you want. If you want/need all the delays and choruses then get another digital amp. Don't listen to us tube snobs.

But here is the typical reply as to what tube amp to get.

Get a 100watt head with a 4x12 cab

No get a small watt combo

No get Digital

Fuck that!

Fuck you!

Fender!

Marshall!

BOOOOGIE!!!!!!!! Marshall sucks my donkeys balls.

Marshall doesn't suck your........what....you have a donkey?

Fender is the best clean.

But its distortion sucks.

Because it doesn't have distortion, it has Overdrive.

Get a Matchless

No BadCat is better than Matchless.

Well who has that much money?

................
.....I don't......do you.....

No.

I do. I have a Matchless and a Bogner

Rich kid!!!!!!

Poor little jelous jerk.

Guys I just want to know what to get.......

SHUUUUTTTTTT UPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...... .. ........

So, How much do you want to spend?

actually a 55 to 60 watt combo would be good for him. he would just have to make sure that it had an extension speaker out put......so when he had a bit more money, he could get a 2 -12 or 4-12 cab to plug it into.

that way he can turn it down at home and turn it up for live playing and get badass distortion sounds.

A 50-60 watt combo is going to be hella loud at home. That is why you need two amps. A six watt home jam session combo and a modified 5000 watt club amp.

nahh man. i've got a 55 watt amp and it's get's dang quiet......get's dang loud also.........

ok so maybe he can get a 30 watt combo.

or 2 amps if he gigs all the time.

Tube amps sound like shit at low volumes. Now amt7565 will have the same problem (Sounds bad loud but good low), only reversed.

Plus a highwattage tube amp has a shitload of noise from the power transformer that is way out infront of the sound at low volumes.

There is no compromise. Either get it for gigs or get it for home.

Sorry.

Just trying to make you think before getting anything that expensive. Don't want you to make all the mistakes I have made.

Interesting!
Thanks for all the advise...I am still contemplating....

i had the flextone 2 combo and was impressed initially by the classic sounds but i soon saw through it, and i think any other experienced players outhere will do to, i think they lack in sustain, presence and don't have any real guts for serious live work and recording.

Great practise/rehearsal amp though.

if you want a real valve amp that responds to how you play get a vox ac30 top boost model,

cheers

get a fender hot rpd deville and a good overdrive petal...you can do that for under a grand

i got a used hot rod deville that looks and works as good as a brand new one for 300 bucks....it will get loud

i use a boss blues driver....but there are alot of distortion and overdrive petals on the market

Oh nooooo. Really? Damn. OK I was going to get a Marshall TSL or DSL Head for home recording at medium to low volumes..... looks like this won't work. How about the Marshall MGD 100 Watt head. I know its solid state but I've found the way to make my other solid state ballsy enough.

The MGD 100 watt head will be better for lower volumes? (dirty/Marshall mids-heavy crunch sound)

(Sorry amt7565 I had to interrupt and ask this quickie-)

thanks

In my experience, solidstates sound more or less then same at any volume.

If you like the Marshall sound, they did make a 15 watt studio tube combo.

You might not have all the extra chanels, but an overdrive pedal will solve that problem real quick. 15 watts is still a hell of a lot of volume, but at least you can get that cream at a halfway decent volume.
