I've been using an sm57 to record an Epiphone Sheraton into a Vox ac15 with mediocre results....I know a lot of people swear by this mic but it just doesn't capture the shimmer or fullness of my amp, it sounds quite bland and dull. Can anyone suggest a mic that might suit better? My style of playing is similar to that of The Strokes etc etc. Perhaps 2 mics simultaneous might get what I'm looking for?

I'm currently using a Motu 8pre into a Macbook Pro 15" using Reaper.

I was gonna answer this one, really I was, but now I think I will just sit here with a box of popcorn and a drink and see what happens...

haha, is it because I'm not gettin good results from the 57 or because there are so many other mics....?

Because it's been asked about a lot.
Best answer ..... keep using the 57 and get a LDC to mic up the amp as well mix both of those tracks to taste.

ok cool never thought of that, I need a LDC anyway so thats handy. I'll give it a try man thanks. Any other suggestions besides using the 57?

The Sennheiser e609 or the e906
Even a cheap MXL R144 at $89. or the Nady rsm4 at$69. Both ribbon microphones will do great on a guitar amp for recording.

Nah, ate 'em all, aready. Shoudda asked earlier.

Have you experimented with mic placement? pointed at the cone / at the edge / different distances? can get lots of different reults
