GTP3 Question: Multi Input Recording

First off, Im a complete idiot when it comes to home recording...LOL. What I know Ive learned through asking and reading online.

Therefore, you all are my next step in learning. :D

Ive just recently hooked a mixer up to my soundcard via "line in". Now, Im wondering if theres a way to simulataneously record 3 seperate tracks of input (2 guitars and a mic) in GTP or do you have to record one track at a time and then mix/bounce em down?

From what Ive read I figured maybe the buses would have something to do with this but as I stated above...Im a home recording noob and wouldnt begin to know where to start if my hunch was correct.

You can easily record multiple separate tracks in GTP3. However, I think you need to have a sound card that has multiple input channels. A soundcard with one stereo line in could be split up into two mono inputs I think...via a Y splitter. So i think you could send the left to say track one and the right to say track 2...but I am not 100% sure on that. I am thinking that a single line in jack would only make available 1 track in your recording software. Someone please clarify this?? But to really record multiple tracks you need to have a multiple input soundcard. The other thing is...do you want to record the 3 inputs to 3 individual tracks? Or are you happy just to have them all sent to track 1? If you are happy to have them all on track 1, and don't mind about not being able to 'tweak' each instrument individually in its own track, then you will be ok I think.

What type of soundcard do you have?

Im sure your probably right and Im positive theres nothing that can be done with an SB Live card.

As far as laying down one track at a time...yea, Ive done that but I was hoping to be able to just plug in, make a few mouse clicks and record some screw around jam sessions.

I guess this settles it...gotta tell the wife I need to build another computer for music...LOL.

Thanks for your input. I have to concede that youre probably right. I guess I'll just go back to the cassette deck for recording drunken jam sessions ;) .

Yes, you can record 2 separate tracks at once with a stereo line in as Monkey Allen described. For more tracks, you'd need to upgrade your soundcard/interface. However, for recording drunken jam sessions, you could always just set up a few mics around the room, plug them into your mixer, pan them to attempt to represent how they are set up in the room, and send that stereo mix to your GTP3 as 1 stereo track. It should beat the old mono cassette deck since you'll get some stereo spread (much better for you than margarine and no trans fat :D). Plus this way you can always delete all that empty tape in between takes, separate songs into their own projects, put markers on different places in the music where you maybe hear a promising riff or something, maybe apply some digital noise reduction, etc...
 
Wow, just saw this! Thanks for the info. It does make sense and should work until I get the nerve up to tell the war department that Im building another system...LOL.
