Group Channel Track - Volume=Input Gain?

Hey everyone,

The other day I was trying to automate the volume of my Guitar Group Channel, and came to find that you can't automate the volume of a group.. Is that correct? But, I found that you can automate the input gain on those tracks... So my question is, can input gain be used in the same manner here as volume? It seemed to work, but i'd like to know what i'm actually doing by reducing the input gain. Are there any side effects of doing things this way?

Of course you can. Just press the W button on the group track and write away. Remember to make sure that the W button is disabled and the R button is enabled afterwards.

Otherwise, you can write automation manually on the project window.

Sure, I know how to write automation, but when i click the little + to get those automation tracks (idk what they're called for real), Volume isn't listed as a choice like it is with a typical audio track. Even when I go to "more" and try to select a new parameter, volume isn't a selectable option.
Does input gain serve a similar function though?
 
Automating the input gain will indeed cause the level to change but it will be pre-fader and pre-inserts so any level-based processing you might have on the track, such as compression, will be affected.

And by the way, the group tracks do have a volume automation lane and you can see them as displayed by lines across the project window screen emanating from the group track. There is no need to open another automation lane. Observe:

The lines coming from the group tracks in the red circled area are the volume automation lanes themselves. You can modify them by pressing the green "R" button on the group channel in question and by manually drawing it in.

However, why don't you just write automation from the mixer using the mouse (or, alternatively, with a controller if you have one) and the R/W buttons? You will see the resulting automation written to the above lines and you can then edit them til you're happy.

Hey thanks for your help! You know, I never realized that there was a whole menu for automation (up there where you can change the type of automation to touch, etc). I guess what I was looking for was a way to turn down every track that was set to the buss for an output, rather than doing so for 4 individual guitar tracks. I found it in that menu!

Oh, and great help with the input gain! I can hear that it's prefader when i listen more closely. Not the best way to accomplish what i was looking for :rolleyes:
