Hello everyone,

I have been reading this forum for a while now, and thought I would post to ask for some advice about some equipment choices that my band and I are making to set up a decent DAW. The following is what we have been working with:

Tascam M-2600-16
Tascam TSR-8
Various mics - nothing outstanding, but suits our needs.

We are wanting to be able to record more tracks, and instead of spending the money - or even waiting to find a good 16 track tape machine - we decided to set up a DAW to record our stuff. So, after much reading, etc., and cost consideration, this is what we currently are planning:

Computer:
Asus PK-E Motherboard
Intel Q6600
2 gigs DDR2 800
80 GB - program drive
500 GB - project drive (which will be backed up to external drives, which we already have)

Audio Interface
M-Audio Delta 1010

Our plan is to use the M-2600 for mic-pres and run that into the Delta 1010. We usually record 7-8 tracks at once (Drums on 4 tracks, guitar, bass, vocals, and sometimes organ) to get a live take with solid bass and drum tracks. Then we do overdubs or redo the other stuff. With the additional tracks we will have, we will then add whatever else we choose to add.

While I feel fairly confident that this will work, I would like some thoughts on the following:

1) Is there is any other audio interface in the Delta's price range that would be better? Would the Firewire 1814 be a better option?
2) As for equipment, is there anything else we should be looking into that I have not included?
3) We are planning to use Protools M-powered. I am not that familiar with that program or others, so I would like some thoughts on different options regarding software.

One of issues that I know we may run into is in the mix-down stage. As I understand it, if we are recording 10-16 tracks, we will not be able to mixdown using the m-2600 because the Delta 1010 does not have enough outputs to route all the tracks to the mixer. This means that we will have to mix in the software. With respect to this, I would like to know:

1) Am I wrong about this, or is there a way to route more than 8 tracks to the M-2600 for mixing.
2) If I am right about this, what options are available. Are there other interfaces that would be better suited to allowing us to mix using the board? Should we think about running two Delta's? Any advice here would be great.

Lastly, any thoughts on anything that I may not have included would be helpful too. Thanks a bunch.

All the best,

Jason
