I have a friend who is currently recording with a Layla 20 and wants me to help him build a new home recording PC and I'm really curious about the ADAT thing.

He has multiple high end Great River mic-pre units. He wants to be able to record as many channels as possible (at least 12) simultaneously on a PC.

It seems like the E-MU 1820 might be able to do this through the ADAT interface, however, I have no idea what piece of hardware would connect to the mic-pre units and provide an ADAT out. I'm assuming some sort of A/D converter but I don't know much about them.

Finally, he currently uses Cool Edit Pro to do his recording.
Would this work with the E-MU 1820 and the whole ADAT input thing?

Any advice?

The 1820 has 6 line inputs. If you went this way, you would use those and an ADAT input and you have your 12. To use the ADAT, you will need AD conversion on the other 6 channels. You might as well go for an 8 channel AD convertor and use 4 inputs on the 1820.

You chain would look like this:
Pre 1,8 -> AD convertor -> 1820 via adat
Pre 9 -> 1820 line 1
Pre 10 -> 1820 line 2
Pre 11 -> 1820 line 3
Pre 12 -> 1820 line 4

I happen to do something similar here.

What about an RME Fireface? That gives you 12 channels of conversion I believe:D
