you know, yamaha used to have some very expensive guitars back in the mid to late 70's. there was one that looked kind of like an ibanez artist and it was close to 2 grand (a very hefty price in the 70's)

Was it the Yamaha SG2000? Carlos Santana used to play one with very ornate carving on the top. Lovely instrument if it's the same one you are thinking of.
I have an '82 Artist, and the SG2000 is the only one I can think of that is similar in shape.
im not sure of the model...that may be it.
i have a friend that played in a real good band back then (my current drummer) and they had a rich dude that hung out with them. they let that dude get on stage and act like he was playing guitar (he couldn't play a lick...but he impressed the ladies cause he was "in the band"). in return he kept them high on coke and bought equiment. he was the one that bought the $2000 yamaha...it was his axe...the one he played air guitar on. the guitar player in that band started using it (rich boy bought a les paul custom). i think billy (guitar player) may still have that guitar, i'll ask him and see what model it is/was.
i don't know what happened to "rich boy". the band got tired of him and ran his ass off. i wish he would resurface...i would get him involved in my studio...let him be the "producer". i could use a vintage neve board, $10,000 worth of mics, and a few 24 track hard drive recorders.
