Great Mics, Cheap Prices...

Those are some killer prices. While it's not my favorite microphone, the AM-52 is well worth $200. I paid closer to $500 for mine.

Track,

what does the 52 compare to...man those are some great prices...but!

It'll out perform most any of the budget mics, IMHO. The AM-52 is multi pattern too (omni, cardiod & figure 8). To me it sounds a little like a AT 4033 but with a smoother top end. The figure 8 pattern on this mic sounds best to me.

You're not kidding those are some killer prices! I just bought 2 of the am-52's,now I can't wait for them to get here!

Man I wish I had some cash...

Ian
Anyone want to buy me one (or two, you know, stereo)??

I did some searching for reviews of these products:

AM51 & AM52 @ SoS

AM11, AM30, AM40 @ SoS

AM11 & AM40 @ Studio Sound

AM52 & AM62 @ Mix

AM51 & AM52 @ Studio Sound

Based on what I read in these reviews, I think its safe to make a few conclusions:

  • The tube mics aren't very tubey sounding
  • The large bodied large diaphragm mics are more sensitive to popping - but only when used w/o a pop filter
  • The AM51/52 may have the crispy high-end of the cheaper chinese condensers, which may also cause lots of sibilance
  • The AM11 is described as smooth with a flat response and no unwanted high-end nastiness, but then compared to a Rode NT1 - a well known crispy mic
  • Like most magazine reviews (for gear anyway) you see these days, the conclusions are rather dodgy and not very critical

The GT mics are also Chinese made...of course in my book that is not bad. The tube in them is a micro mini tube. They are not socketed in either, they are just wired in. The reason they can do this, is the tube does not get hot...it barely gets warm to the touch. So that is why they do not sound like a tube, becuase the tube they use really can't do much. In addition, they use the very cheap transformer outputs so they are a bit noisy and add more distortion that you need.

now noone called for Alan, no one mentioned Studio Projects mics....so why did you jump on this one Alan other than the fact that if someone buys one of GT mics, YOU DONT GET PAID......

but i guess im bashing.....you should be lucky noone here puts a lot of weight on my opinions and thinks i talk mainly from my ass......because I would not allow you to continue this......

Id much rather put my $$$ down based on Track Rat's opinions than yours because your opinions , Alan, are too biased.....

Gidge,

I posted it so people know what they are buying, and it was directed for Dolemite based on his comments. I did not ask you to bash me for commenting to him. If Dolemite thinks I based, then he can bash me. I don't care if someo else buys other mics Gidge, after I don't sell everyone my mics, so I thought perhaps Dolemite and possibly some others would like to know what's on the inside of them.

Gidge, I could care less where you put you're money, and I am not interested in getting into a war with you because you post so much I would be spending all day just answering your flames against me. So just drop it already.

Alan Hyatt

Maybe Gidge doesn't really mean any of this Alan, I mean anyone with that many posts didn't get there by being a ...........

Nah, let it go, it just isn't worth it, but it sure is a hell of a way to get to 5000 posts quick.

:D

I'm trying Chris...really I am :D

"I like having you around Alan, I really do, but you are pushing the envelope a bit."

a quote from Track Rat in another thread......

Gidge, it seems many are saying the same about you. Just stop slammin every post I make and leave it at that. Those that don't like what I say...fine, but there are those that do. There is no reason to be childish over this...just let it go and move on. :(

I'm not going to get invovled in this party but Gidge were you are wrong is pointing this issue out on every thread Alan appears.

It seems you take the whole BBs as retards and asume that nobody has the capabilty to decide for themselfs if Alan is spamming and selling like a cars salesman his product......
It would seem that you think Alan put a spell on us all and nobdy is of sound of mind to undo the spell and now we are all going to buy his mics cause he says they are great.....

I suggest you give the bbs some more credit. Those that think he is spamming can point it out to Dragon (as you have done practicly daily...). Let him do what he wants as its his place.....

When he wants to kick FT's ass he seems to do fine......
Otherwise perhaps you should consider droping it by now......
We got your point...really

Shailat,

as one of the people i do respect here, ill take your comments under consideration.....

however, i will also have to take your comments as a person stab at me, saying that I have pointed out Alans spamming to Dragon daily.....i really take offense to that as it is totally false....I have NEVER reported Alan to Dragon...not once...not ever....and i wont.....

i really dont understand that personal stab considering ive NEVER said anything bad about you and have always held you in the highest respect......

This is quite consistent with what I was reading yesterday. The tubes are military-spec and run at 6 or 6.2 V or something like that. I didn't read anything about the transformers, but I wasn't expecting Jensens. ;)

Now, I'm generally not one to be defending Alan, but there's no reason he should be censored or chastized for giving his opinion on something. We all know where's he's coming from, and no doubt that has some affect on what he says at times, but that by no means invalidates everything he has to say. I'm sure we can all recognize when his perpective is affecting his posts anyway.

Alan,

I read something on r.a.p that some chinese 6 micron capsule (that they actually ended up using) beat out even Steven Sank's capsules in competing for the Groove Tubes contract. Have you heard anything about this?

I meant it in a abstract way.
But I also apologise for offending you.

Maybe it's in how your posts are interpretted.

It's not an uncommon behavioural pattern..........e.g; little johnny gets continually pissed at his big brother, but mummy doesn't consider it an issue and consequently ignores it......so what does little johnny do? Continually whinges and whines in the forlorn hope that someone will actually take his side................usually he ends up being bitch-slapped by the rest of the family for his intolerance and immaturity.

No direct comparision to anyone intended.

ill consider myself bitch slapped by Shailat....

ill accept the "abstract" thing....why would you say i reported Alan to Dragon when i didnt?.....
