Great Expectations?

My computer is a 100Mhz Pentium with 46MB of RAM, a 3.1GB IDE HD. My soundcard is a SB AWE-64. What should I expect from this thing? Is it remotely capable of being used as a DAW? Is it worth upgrading or should I just build a new one if I want a DAW? What would you recomend for a basic (But expandible) DAW? Should the recording HD be the master device on its bus or does it make a difference? Actually if the HD was SCSI would all that Master and slave crap even matter? While I'm at it what is currently the fastest Intel Chip and how much does it go for? I haven't kept up with the market for over a year now. I used to be into that crap but it soon lost its mistique.

Not much. I struggled along with a P90 with 24MB RAM and a DAL Cardd+ for a long time. The soundcard was the best part of that system.

Nope. SCSI devices aren't divided this way.

I think it's the PIII-550. Check zdnet.com for the latest pricing. But I wouldn't spend any money to bridge the gap between 350 and 550. I'd spend the dough on a better soundcard or more RAM or a bigger, faster HD.

as far as upgrading goes I just found an ad in the New York Times for Pacific Coast Computers and found an unreal deal. You can get a PIII 450MMX, 128MB, 10Gig HD, DVD CDRom, Speakers (including a subwoofer), 17" monitor, a HP printer, Color scanner, color camera, plus some other stuff all for, are you ready $679.65 This place has a web site but it is not yet fully functional. I would go this direction if I were you. However I would look into the company first, I don't know how good they are, and this sounds like it's to good to be true. If you find out, let me know. I would really consider upgrading your RAM. In fact, your entire computer could use an upgrade.

I bet if I had a time machine the OP's would lose their minds at people having RAM bigger than their harddrives!
