Oh yea, my Alesis 3630 Compressor just bit the dust! GREAT DAY! Now I get something new and real.

What do you guys think of the DBX 286A as a mic pre/compressor/gate.. I know it is a cheapy but I don't have very much more money to spend on these things, ya know.

DBX 266s

I found the preamp of the 286 to be noisier than I could take, your threshold to pain might be higher. If you are seriously considering a cheap compressor like the DBX 266 I've got 2 I am getting ready to post on Ebay. I'd make you a deal on 1 or more.
I just bought the FMR RNC(really nice compressor). If you can spend about $175.00 that would really be the way to go.

Scott, for low bucks, a Behringer (beleive it or don't) at around $100 street is the best bang for buck. The RNC is better still at $175. I have two RNCs and a Composer and a DBX 266 for that matter and I like 'em all.

I have a DBX 286A.
It's an OK unit. I don't really use it anymore, but at its time, it was a good unit for me to learn compression on.
I think it's sitting in the closet in its original box!
I'd let it go for a song. (Well...almost, maybe, if it was a really good song. :) )

I use the multi-band compressor in my DAW now-a-days.

Scott, I would get a Studio Projects VTB-1 to go along with that RNC because...
That's what I did! :)

When you have enough extra $$, a Joe Meek compressor would be a nice addition to add some spice. The RNC/Meek combo is
killer IMHO. RNC for "clean" and Meek for "color".

Chris

P.S. A dead 3630 still is a great compressor for;

1) Squishing bugs
2) Squashing cans
