Grand piano micing Q's

I'm new to both home recording and this forum. I borrowed an SM58 and an Sm57 from a friend to record piano tracks...Unfortunately when I listen to the track, you could hear the pedal thumps rather prominently... the mics were placed on stand pointing to the soundboard... the 57 was not as bad as the 58, but both were too noticable...

I would appreciate and hints as to placement and/or remedies

You need to use a condenser to properly capture the sound of a piano - SM57/58 (essentially the same thing) WON'T cut it at all!
