Anybody have an idea on how to get that old-fashioned sounding vocal effect? The best example I can think of is the vocal track on "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon," by Queen. I'll tell you in advance, I have limited equipment and zero budget...LoL I'm new to home recording, so I appreciate any advice anyone might have on this subject. Thanks! :)

What software are you using? Basic idea is 'pinch your nose' and adjust EQ!

I think the actual vocal take for that song was recorded with a 'proper' microphone, but it was then played out through a set of headphones in a tin can and re recorded with a different mic.

You wouldn't necessarily need to go to those lengths though.
June's advice should get you close.

There are plenty of "lo-fi" VSTs that will do what you want! And the best part is that most of them are free!

If you want to go REALLY gramophone, Izotope have a lovely free plugin called "Vinyl" that you can download HERE.

Besides bandwidth, this can also add the usual crackle and noise associated with old recordings--it's been very useful on some sound design stuff I've had to do.

I thought I had a VST that had that lo-fi, gramophone sound, so I looked and the one I've got is the KVR Grungelizer. It lets you add "crackle", "static", and also a lot of other stuff that will probably get the sound you're looking for! I've gotta go study, but I might put up a clip later on so you can hear it for yourself! Anyhow, it's a free VST so just google search it and try it out!

Overwhelmed!

Thanks to everyone who replied to my question! This was my first time visiting this site, and I will definitely be back, you guys/gals all rock!

Did you check out the KVR Grungelizer plug-in I mentioned?

I did! It looks awesome! I'm still in the process of building my "studio," such as it is...I never realized there was so much free stuff out there. My equipment so far consists of a Korg Pandora PXR4 Multi Track Recorder, and that's it, basically. I am looking for a computer in my price range (low! LoL) to use for mixing, and will be adding some of these plug-ins as soon as I get my hands on one! Thanks again!
