Hi I just bought a Philips N2208 cassette recorder and am confused.
Can I just buy something like a 5 PIN DIN Connector Cable Plug from eBay and plug a male jack from a modern microphone into it or do I have to go down the car boot/eBay vintage mike route?
I'm really techologically inept so no big words/jargon please!
Thank you.
Hugh

Well, first of all you have to determine the pin configuration of that DIN connector, then you can solder up an adapter. Most likely it's designed to take a high impedance unbalanced microphone. A low impedance balanced mic may need an impedance matching transformer to work properly, and some mics will need a phantom power supply.

Frankly I'm also confused. Why would you want to use such a device? Most phones can make better recordings than that ancient portable cassette recorder.

5 pin Din to 4 x RCA connectors is very common, you could get one of these and a mic to rca adaptor and try each RCA until you get the right one that works LOL.

Yep, DIN connectors were fairly common in the early days of cassette.

Thanks for the input(s). My attempt at a tech bad pun. The Philips cassette recorder does have mic, line and phono inputs. I could record onto a phone but I like and am accustomed to singing into a mic and if that makes me comfortable then I'll get a better vocal performance - even if the recordings are demos for band use only. Ta.

?????? phono inputs are not for phones? They are for vinyl turntable inputs.

Earlier I suggested he'd get better quality from a smart phone than from that cassette recorder.
