I've got like 700 dollars that I'd like to spend on enhancing the quality of my music. I've got a very decent recorder, and as for a preamp have the dmp3 and for mics I generally use a pair of ADK hamburgs. If I wanted to try and have my music sound a little more professional, should I try getting "better" mics or preamp? Don't say "what's the room like?" I'm recording in a very large living room with 20 ft high angled walls, sounds great! Or do you think I need to get better of both to get a better sound? Thanks.

You're missing an important datum...what don't you like about the existing results you are getting and what are you recording.

Anti, what instruments and style are you doing?

hey falken, I'm doing quite a few things. Accoustic/electric guitar, grand piano, fender rhodes EP, drums and percussion, vocals (smooth and high), perhaps violin. The stuff I record can range from minimalist garage rock to more smooth accoustic stuff.

well, eventually you should drop a grand on a pair of pres. but for now, I really think you need some mics. especially some dynamics. I think maybe an re-20. my secret weapon for electric guitar: uher m537. pair of 57s. also, a pair of oktava's might be good for acoustic instruments and drums. I think get a variety of mics, and then when you finally do get those phat preamps you'll have a use for them.

id take a gamble and buy 700 lottery tickets. You would have to hit big on at least 1 right?

Buy whatever MCIx0x0 tells you to buy!

......................

If you don't have quality instruments, I'd spend it on the instruments. Second, how are your monitors? 3rd, invest in a quality preamp (save an extra $300 and get a truly awesome one like a great river and track everything through that.

hey thanks, I actually have to 57s that work well for miking electric.

Wait around on ebay you can find some nice royer 121's for around $700

Or I'm loving my Hamptone pres right now and they were only a little more than that.

But just make the purchase where you think you are lacking.

Final option is save

drop it into my paypal account :)

ill sell you my ex girlfriends gstring and a couple 57's.

actually, i would get a couple 57's. also like ryan said, quality instruments. your recordings can be no better than the source. maybe a nice acoustic. it sounds like your recording some pretty sweet stuff, nothing too heavy. maybe a nice tube mic, possibly a Rode NTK.

let me know on the gstring and the 57's though. ;)

the DAV or Hamptone is "truly awesome"...the hamptone is every bit as good as a Pendulum or Fearn (I love my pendulums too!) and the DAV is every bit as good as any Gordon , Millennia, or GML. etc....I like to have a "clean" set(DAV) and a "colored set(Pendulum, Hamptone) of preamps..
.DAVs are the best mic pres in the world, didnt you get the memo?

You could also grab a few shiny box ribbons and a pair of SP C-4s..Ribbons are a must have, IMHO..

How's your recording space?

You could make some amazing recordings in a well treated room with the gear you have. If your room is bad there's not much point spending money on fancy mics and pres.

I know that this doesn't answer your question but personally I'd use the money to upgrade (from your current live Peavey board) to a better older mixing console, many of which had much better preamps, connectivity and features and can be had for a song on the used market.

For mics, I'd get some sm57's and Oktava's (mk219, mk319). Best price / performance ratio, imho.

some good monitors would help a lot for sure....
