hey guys I've got a big concert to do in two weeks and need to get them an estimate.

I've got to provide FOH sound for 800 people and record and mix the whole show. Its a church concert and at least 10 songs that are 24 tracks of live recording that will need to be mixed down.

I know how much to charge for the FOH, but recording and mixing this monster is another story. I figure I have at least 2-3 weeks of mixing to get it right.

I was thinking of charging 3k for the whole thing.

What would you charge if there was no recording involved?

Around here if you are providing all the gear and doing the recording I would think 3k would be inline. You could probably get 1500 just for running the live sound and providing the set up. Without providing the gear I usually see guys getting about $500 for the night for the live show. As long as they are not asking you to do major things with the live mix, that 3k sounds ok, but if they want you to fix things in post like when they mess up, I would definitly go by the hour for your mixing time, because that can snowball.

I did several live shows, and it was amazing the things that you don't plan for that end up needing to be fixed later, and it just kills you on time.

Sounds like a fun project though hope it all goes well.

I would charge $300 for the extra recording gear, and $200 for the extra person's labor. I am assuming of course that you are running a snake split to a seperate console. If you are tracking off of the FOH desk I would cut the labor charge, and drop the equipment charge in half. After that I would charge hourly whether it be just transfering, mixing, editing or whatever.

On the business side of things:

You could either go hourly or just one entire fee from the get go.

Since you're basically doing a few different jobs in one, 60 an hour could justify a massive job like this. The fee would still apply to the hours spent on mixing afterwards. So you're probably looking at anywhere from 800-1500 as a final total. This implies some serious engineering on your part, though.

I would give the concert anywhere from 2-4 hours, then another 10-12hours for mixing (about an hour for each song); so you could work on that to calculate an estimate.

Well, I'm going to be at the church anyway hooking up the sound in their new church (not finished) so they asked me to provide equipment and run live sound. I was going to charge $1200.00 just for the sound. All I have to do to record is connect my HD24 to my Dm-24 and hit record so no sweet there.

The bummer part is that its a Mexican Concert and I'll have to spend all of those hours mixing music I don't understand :) Do you think I'll have a problem with that. I know there will be some talking so how do I know what to cut out? I'll need to hire an interpetor i guess

I would say the best thing is to record the whole thing. Especially if you're not too sure about that language barrier. The question is: do you have enough memory for that? You could use that as leverage for higher pay (I'm not satanic I swear).

Also remember things like the dangers of pluging balanced into unbalanced, an estimate of how taxing it will be on your gear and emergency things like power outages. Sometimes the stupidest things are the ones that bite people in the ass :D.

Maybe some of that goodness will rub off on your crooked ass in church.

...

I'm still looking for a post by deepwater that's not about money.
