got 4 mikes connected to a gate, now how do i connect the gate to my mixer?

ok, just a short question;

i miked up my drumkit, and i got 4 mics connected to my
4-channel gate (all the inputs are balanced XLR)

now i can connect this gate with my mixing desc using XLR outputs
or JACK outputs (balanced and unbalanced)


lets say that on the GATE, i only use the XLR outputs, with balanced cables,
but i use XLR to 1/4" jack cables...

so i can connect the gate with the LINE inputs of my mixer
now, will i hear a difference in volume if i connect the gate to the XLR mic inputs of my mixer ?
if i'm correct there is a difference between the mic pres and the line in,no ?

cause right now i'm wondering,,,,can i just use a few XLR outputs and a few 1/4" jacks at the same time ?
my gate automaticly detects it when i'm using balanced and unbalanced cables...and it fixes that 6db difference in volume...(if i'm explaining it right)

so please tell me, should i really connect everything the same way,
or can i mix up all the cables....some balanced, some unbalanced, some XLR, some 1/4" jack,....

damn...i'm making it complicated...you should just see me do it, its something real simple....anyways.....i'm listening

Does your mixer have inserts? If it does, then connect the gates to the group inserts and then assign the miced channels to the groups.
Unless your mixer has inserts on the individual channels, then just insert the gates on the channels the mics are on.

You'd probably want to amp the signal before the gate, what with s/n ratio and all.

ok, so you're saying its best to use the gate on my INSERTS, yes i do have an insert on each channel, and i'm gonna buy a Multicore insert cable, cause i don't have enough Y cables...

so you say its best if i can Amp my signal before its gated ? ok,
but damned, i always forget wheater my Inserts are Post or Pre EQ...
i never really used my inserts untill last week....(blush...)

but, one thing is unclear, so i can simply put an Insert Gate on each channel,
fine, BUT, lets say i routed all my toms to SUBGROUP 3,
can i just put ONE insert on that Subgroup 3 , and send it to my gate ?

is that good enough for my signal, cause then i got like Three toms that wanna be gated...will this cause problems ?

i can't test it for the moment cause i screwed open my mixer for...lets say maintenance.....

so a short summary:

- do my XLR inputs and LINE inputs operate at the same volume ?
- can i put One gate on a BUSS that contains three Toms ?
- or is the only option: put a gate on every insert on every (drum)channel

yes you can put one gate on one bus (assuming you have inserts on that bus?) with 3 toms but its going to have its drawbacks. All of the toms will have to be similar in level or your going to need to set the threshold really low to make sure each tom hit is getting through. I personally like to insert on each tom because some toms collect more bleed than others. Thats my experience at least.
