My vote goes to The Presidents Of The United States Of America. That Kitty song kills me.And how about Lump, is there some hidden meaning?Strangely catchy though.

Does Weird Al Yankovic count? he writes his own lyrics to famous songs :D

Smells Like Nirvana and Amish Paradise are awesome!

dead milkmen

those guys in the dead milkmen were pretty zany!

Here's an old-skool vote for:

Spike Jones,
Roger Miller, and
Ray Stevens

Oh yeah, and Martin Mull was a riot, back when he was still doing the music thing. Check out Santafly, or M-I-A-M-I. Or Dueling Tubas.

How 'bout System of a Down?

Man, those guys are freaky. :p

WATYF

Ed Haynes

It's not likely you'll find his stuff online anywhere. He was an indie flash in the pan so to speak.

But man! 3 songs that totally crack me up:

Talkin Cat Blues
I wanna Kill Everybody
Splash!

The man was brilliant. If I get a few requests I might take the time to jot out the lyrics to these here... I'd post them as MP3s, but I'd likely get flamed for it :D :D :D

As Weird Al and Spike Jones already was mentioned...

Early Gong, guess Steve Hillage was the main writer...

How about Tom Lehrer?

MY favorite comedy writer in a landslide is Tom Lehrer, who penned such favorites as,

"The Old Dope Peddler"
"I'm Spending Hannukah in Santa Monica"
"The MLF Lullaby"
"The Elements Song"
"The Vatican Rag"
"The Masochism Tango"

and, of course, everyone's favorite,

"Poisoning Pigeons in the Park."

Quite a bright guy, (Mathematics professor at Harvard) a great piano player and brilliantly dry sense of humor.

Anybody know him?

Daf--Roger Miller came to mind immediately!

Weird Al is a riot too.

Warren Zevon had his share of zany stuff too. "Gorilla, You're a Desperado" comes to mind. He had a line about this gorilla buying a condo project in Malibu or something- "They called it Villa Gorilla".

Loudon Wainwright III wrote some off the wall stuff.

Theres a guy out in California...don't know his name....who wrote a song titled "Its So Hard To Say I Love You (when you're sitting on my face) that is pretty brilliant. Actually, the lyrics are really well crafted. Anybody know who this is?

I heard some of his stuff... I especially loved "The Masochism Tango"

Ever heard of some guy named T-Bone who did a tune called "The Existential Blues"? That was a trippy tune...

Yeah... I always wondered how someone could sing such ridiculous lyrics without cracking up!

Yeah. That's a great song. It's on Dr. Demento's first two disc collection, a staple of my adolescent collection. Here's a link.

I strongly recommend the whole disc. the T-Bone track has always been one of my favorites on the disc.

How about cake? unconventional lyrics, yet DAMN good songs.
Or Tenacious D? I know they are a comedy routine, but there is some serious musicianship to talk about with "The D"

oh and here's a bump for tom lerher too, what a genius!

I was reading through this thread and half way down just before Adam Sandler was mentioned I was thinking of him... then Tenacious D... both have been mentioned.

In Australia, there are a couple of good 'goofy' writing teams:

Tripod... cream of the crop would have to be their Ikea song (as in the Furniature store)
Scared Wierd Little Guys

Both are basically musical comedy acts.

Porter

was gonna mention cake

I was just listening to a mix I made for my girlfriend's birthday and the Cake song, Sheep Go to Heaven was playing. It reminded me of my previous posts in this thread so I thought I'd throw cake in the mix. THEN, I see Chris Hilman beat me to it! Damn, Chris. Get out of my brain!

Of course, The D is a classic for goofy lyrics. I write a little bit like their stuff. here's my nowhere radio page for all those into semi-racy acoustic comedy out there. Sacagawea and Rock Your Frock could possibly qualify for the goofy writer category.

Another agreement for TMBG. They've always been one of my favorites. "They" was my first ever concert way back in '93 where Frank Black from the Pixies opened for them.

Another group, Moxy Fruvous, might also qualify. And maybe Tom Waits but not in the fun loving sense of goofy. More as in totally odd.

Miles

And amazon owes me at least a fin for my link!
