Yeah I been drinkin, SO!?
After 2 or 3 years with my spider, I'm throroughly sick of it. I hope I can get $100 bucks for it, otherwise I'll probably hang on to it and use it to mutilate my rhodes sounds.

I know some people say 'save up for great, don't settle for OK,' but I only make music for my (and my kids') enjoyment, no need (or budget) to be pro, and I don't play out on guitar. I was contemplating the following rig (for starters) and wanted opinions:

orange 1x12" solid state 30w
tube screamer
crybaby

I figure I can ebay the pedals and trade up (or sideways) if I'm dissatisfied.

What I hated about the spider: it sounded thin and fake
What I want: a more genuine, gritty, raw sound, for everything from rock to 70's funk and r&b

I was sure I'd want a toob amp, but for $200, the orange sounds good to me! Anyhow, considering this is just for laughs pretty much, let me know how well this cheap-ass setup will get me to my goal. BTW, I play a guild solidbody from the 80's, don't have it near me right now for the model #. I mic with a 57 using either the pre's on my digi001 or my crappy old mackie mixer.

Thanks!

Looks pretty cool. I don't know much about that amp, but orange are a good brand.

I'd go for a lower-output tube amp in place of that 30W solid state. Even 5 watts is enough to run someone out of a small room.

Epi Valve Jr head for $129, or a Blackheart Little Giant head for $149, or a combo of either for a bit more.........

Plus a tube amp will make that Tube Screamer truly scream :) I'd think that it'd be much less effective overdriving a solid-state circuit.

Yep, I agree. If you want something that sounds "genuine, gritty, and raw," you need to go the tube route.

and the crush is 1x10..just so you know. Go blackheart...for 50 bucks more...and a 12 inch speaker..and tubes. IF your using a distortion pedal, why need a 2 channel amp?

Because I'm ignorant. I figured the TS would help funk up a solid state amp. I've neve5r played a blackheart, I'll check them out, thanks.

edit: surprised to find a Crate recommended, but I'll play one and see if I can find one nearby

$200 bucks will grab ya a new Fender Champion 600 (5W, 1x6). I've played through several of 'em, trying out guitars, and I can honestly say this lil' amp has no shame, whatsoever, for the big sound that comes out of that small of a package. Oh, it's all tube, not solid state.

My advice is to actually try the Orange first. Orange make great gear and I have one of the baby 15w amps for practice, but try everything in your price range in case you find something better-what have you got to lose?

Also (I'll probably get crucified here) I'd try out different pedals. I think new Tube Screamers are overated (the one I got was very disappointing) and you can probably get something a bit more flexible.

Cheers,
Mike.

I have played my friends orange..and its alright...but thats about it. I'd most certainly use it for a practice amp..even though i'd prefer a line 6 flextone or something for a solid state amp...The gain has a lot of buzz when u get it in good distortion level...or it was on my friends(he has an old house..and his electrical lines are kinda weird..it made less noise when we turned off the lights so...idk haha). But i didnt find it anything special...i prefer my line 6 spider half stack..but i amp thinking about upgrading that to a blackheart(its owned by crate..but blackheart is not really like a crate amp) and they are alll the rage..and liked over the valve jr(most of the time).

If not that, go a crate palomino or something..i mean..theres a good ammount of cheap tube amps in ur price range. But hey, if you love the orange a lot, then go for it.
