Good valve pre?(TL Audio vs SPL)

Hi, I'm lookin for a decent pre suitable for most recording purposes. I have a Focusrite Voicemaster but it is not much improvement on the pre's of my AKAI DPS24.

Lookin at a TL Audio VP2051 Indigo Series pre/comp and also the SPL Gold mike which I have located second hand quite cheap..
Any opinions on these? Anyone ever used the TL Audio Indigo(quite rare now).
Can only afford up to £400..
