Here is my situation. My studio area is a cramped area in the corner of a room (See pic's) My guitar amp is right next to my computer and playing area. I'm currently running everything direct into the computer so this set-up works pretty well. I'm wanting to mic my guitar amp but I dont want to rearrange my set-up. Would there be any problems with mic'ing my amp while I play the guitar so close to it? I would like to be able to mic it in stereo, probably with two SM-57's or how about with one of those stereo mic's? I would like to capture the sound coming from the speakers and some of the room ambience (air.) Should I put up some kind of divider wall between the amp and where I play or would that cause to much reflection on the right side? I've never done any mic'ing before, so any experience anyone can offer me will be greatly appreciated.

Whatever works...works.

If you dont need the volume up on the amp to an earsplitting level then using it there will be fine. The main problem will be any sound from your computer fan. Especially if you put any mics back in the room for more room sound.

Some people like to stick the amp in a closet or another room for better isolation but there are no rules.

Nice amp. I want one...

If you just stand with the guitar over to the left side some....i think you will be fine miking it from where it is. As far as room ambience...try stereo micing it without any wall there..see if you like the results. depends on how "alive" the room really sounds. If you do want to dampen it some...probably couch coushins in front of it would help you out - you won't have any problem with sound from behind or too much to the side of the amp - i think you are probably in a pretty good position to get a good sound.

Just throw your mics up there and see what happens. Adjust as needed.

yeah.....computer fan could potentially be a problem. Though, I think once you have maybe a pillow or whatever around it and maybe gate it or something in EQ..you should be alright.

Once the guitar comes in you wont hear it...if ever.

btw - one of the better sounds I ever got from my amp was having a wall of couch coushins arond it, with a comforter draped over the top. No room nosise that way...but, thats what i needed in the particular case. So, you never know..like has been said.

What kind of mic would be good for this? Two SM-57's or a Shure VP88 type stereo mic? (I would like to stay in the sm-57 price range.)

oops, I guess they dont make stereo mic's in that price range.
