Well I'm getting a band together and we are going to need a P.A. so I've been browsing to see what we could get. I know going inexpensive isn't always good, but of course when money is tight aren't we all looking for the best bang for the buck. So what is out there that is a good "value" for the money? I think at least a six channel powered mixer with a couple of cabs is what we would like to start with. I know this is probably a wide open question, but any ideas? By the way I'm thinking under $500 total:o

I think you'll have to look at used gear.

Basic Peavey powered mixer / head and speakers will probably do the job fine for starters. Look for old boat anchor units - craigslist, local guitar stores, tag sales, pawn shops. If you make the rounds of venues to find out who plays locally, track them down and you may tap into a network of local musicians who are up to speed on who in the area might be upgrading their band's gear and so forth - a call from someone interested in buying is always welcome. Look at rental units and ask if you can buy one - see what kind of pricing you get. Might work.

You should be able to get something that works for $ 500, but finding that new will be a stretch. Small systems like the Passport may be found but I expect you will want a little more punch. I'd avoid el cheapo new gear though.

ditto on all that.

And I don't find the Passport systems to be useful for anything other than acoustic acts.
Just too small although they are certainly portable.
But old 'boat anchor speakers are always being unloaded for surprisingly cheap ....... same with old Peavey PA heads.

Cheap PA head

Hi Mr. C, On Ebay is the cheapest New PA head I've seen. the Moses MPX838. 8 channels with 8 xlr mic inputs, phantom power, digital effects. This thing might be total junk but it may be worth looking into. Priced at $139 plus shipping. Shipping is around $31 to where I live. 30 day warranty. CAUTION!!!!Before I'd buy something like this I'd like to know if anyone has used it for a year or so. If you have the money, the Peavey equipment I own has always been reliable and rugged.

Peavey and Yamaha are two I have had in mind. I actually sold a 12 channel Yamaha board which was a monster...and sold two peavey cabs with it so it would sell.:( Wish I hadn't sold the cabs, but I always see them on Daddy's Junky Music site for around $50 to $70 so they are cheap and available. I guess it's just a matter of finding the right mixer. Thanks for the help.
