good mixer for a fostex g16?

I'm not all that familiar with that Fostex deck but, if it's a -10db, unbalanced connection scheme like a lot of the TASCAM RTRs, you'd be best to look for a mixer that has the same connectivity signal chain for it's buss system and tape returns.

The next thing to consider is how many tracks do you foresee yourself recording simultaneously and that number will determine how many busses the mixer should have.

If your working by yourself or with another person, a 4 buss mixer should do the trick. If your recording live bands, an 8 buss or higher board will be required.

In many cases, a mixer will have direct channel strip outs and that can be substituted for a lack of buss outputs.

Also try to find a mixer with at least 24 channel strips so that you have a few extra channels to use as dedicated tracking strips and as extra effects return inputs for different reverb units and such.

Avoid looking at PA mixers as they tend to not have many of the critical features you'll need for recording like the first point I made about signal level and connection type.

Cheers! :)

RAMSA WR-T820 on Ebay right now for around $1000.

I've been using the B model for 16 track work for.... well my first demo was done on one in 1990 in conjunction with a Fostex E-16.

Yeah that would work, but the RAMSA has better EQ, Pre's and killer faders.

It looks decent enough and an 8 buss board, if it's clean electrically for say?;$350 bucks would be a decent price to pay.

I don't know about the seller's $550 buy it now option? That seems a bit steep for a Fostex mixer.

The Ramsa would probably be a way better sounding board though if you can find one for the same money somewhere?

Good luck!

Cheers! :)

If the unit is not in a perfect condition I wouldn't recommend going with it,
almost no replacement parts are available from From Fostex itself.

The last G16S I checked out had so many problems..... and it was a 10 yeas machine... But I must say my M80 which is much older is working just perfect, great sound.

I have a friend who had a 16 track studio based on an E-16, and that same Fostex board that is listed on E-bay, and man - that EQ SUCKS. It's so bad it isn't funny. It's nice that there are actually tape/mic functions (it's sort of an inline mixer) but the rest of the mixer sucked.

I've got a 24 channel Peavey AMR console for sale...
I'd take $1500 Canadian for it for a fellow home recording junkie.

The Seck 1882 board was designed to fit perfectly to a Fostex B16. It has very good pre's and a very British EQ.

Great little board, I bought one a couple of years back for $120, I have three of them now.
