Hi guys,

Basically, for my home studio, I need a new microphone. I upgraded from a TBONE SC400 to a RODE NT1 about a year ago, but if i'm honest, dispite all the glowing reviews of it, im not that impressed!

So, i'm looking for a new mic to replace it, mainly used for vocals and some acoustic guitar.

As for budget, keep it bellow £500 - feel free to discuss :)

I always found the NT1 to be a little too bright for my tastes. The Oktava MK319 has a very strong midrange without any tizzy highs or sibilance.

What are you trying to change about the sound you are getting with the NT1?

I just dont think it sound's that good, need a much warmer better quality microphone in my opinion. I'm obviously not a microphone expert.

Take a gander at the Shure SM7b or the EV RE20 or the Sennheiser MK4.

I have both a SM7B and a MK4 and (IMO) they are very different mics (other then the obvious difference of one being a dynamic and the other being a large condenser). I love what the SM7B does with my voice, and I love what the MK4 does on acoustic guitar. I have not used the SM7B on a acoustic source. I suppose if I had to use just one it'd be the MK4 but I'd miss my SM7B terribly.

I have an SM7B and a 319...the 319 is good on vocals and acoustic. I used it exclusively for a few years when it was all I could afford.

The SM7B is great on vocals...I haven't worked with a male vocal that didn't sound good through the 7B, but for acoustics it's not the best...it's ok, but not great.

If you want to do both acoustic and vocals I'd go with the 319. Most good vocal LDCs are pretty good on acoustics too.
