simple question which is more imporant a good mic or a good preamp. I have another thread sort of like this that no one is repling to so... also is the MXL V69m any good it list at $400 but its on sale for $80  at musiciansfriend.com so i was woundering if its any good or is the price drop because its not a good mic

For the most part...both..a complimentary pair if you will..Hell the whole chain ..Source,mic,preamp and possibly dynamics then the media ect. !But the absolute most important part is the source! As for that microphone I have no idea{Charlie thinks it sucks but Harry loves his} but you gots to try before you buy! There are a ton of those inexpensive mics out there and at 80 bux they are not that much different IMO...Good luck

Generally on a budget I'd recommend sinking more into the mic than the pre, if you can only afford to upgrade one.

I don't see the MXL V69m @ musicansfriend.com for $80.00. If this is right please post a link to the MXL-V69m. I will buy 2 at that price...

a preamp can't add what wasn't picked up in the first place.

BTW what is on sale for $80 is the V63M and not the V69M. If it were really the latter it would have been an amazing price.

At the $80 price it is very good, but other LDCs in the same price range you might consider are the B1 and V67G, CAD GXL2200 and others

In my experience, admittedly less than some of the badasses on this board, as stated above, *on a budget*, upgrading the mic is usually the way to go.
However, when you get into higher budgets, it can be just the reverse. Ask yourself this- what will sound better, a Neumann U47 into an Audiobuddy, or an SM57 into an Avalon? It's true that as said above, the pre can't reproduce what isn't there. It can, however, trash what is there. Often a great pre can bring out the best in a *good* cheap mic, and reveal the worst features of any mic, cheap or not. Note that I'm not disagreeing with what has been said above, just pointing out that the way a mic and a pre combine to reproduce sound isn't always black and white. Certain combinations of mic and pre just work for certain jobs. Furthermore, sometimes a cheap mic is the right mic.-Richie

Too bad that wasnt a V69. I was about to freak and blow the dust off the old credit card.

Believe me, my fingers flew to type in musicians friend's website. Too Bad.
:D

But I do have a question related to this however. I have decided to get the Mogami edition MXL V69. I have a Yamaha 01X. Should I use the preamps there, or should I get an outboard preamp?

Thanks for all the advice on what mic to get. This pre amp question is bugging me now.

I just bought the MXL V67 and it arrived yesterday. From what I have read (and inferred) from this BBS is that now I need to try the new mic with all the mic pres at my disposal to see which combinations produce the nicest sounds. And I have an M-Audio DMP-3 mic pre on its way here and I will then have to repeat the process with all my mics.

Gee I hope the differences will be noticeable. :o

Use what you got,I don't know if your board has inserts..If it does the "tap"the insert.Do this by takeing you 1/4" cable into insert jack going in one click..then take the other end of cable and plug it into your recording device..This will give you generally a clearer/cleaner signal..Experiment.The preamp question goes and goes..Learn the mic and have fun..Good luck :)

Definitly agree.

Actually the $399 list price is bogus. The V63M is available ONLY through Musician's Friend, right? So who sets the 'list' price at $399? MF does! They say that the 'list' price is $399 to give you the impression that if you bought this mic someplace else you would pay a lot more but you can't buy this mic anyplace else! They could just as well say that the 'list' as $1000 and nobody could say elsewise.

That's one of the most laughable traditions in pro audio sales. The list price on my Oktava MC012's is $499. But- I'll sell them to you for only $399. 25% off. Trust me.-Richie
