Hi,

I have a Marshall MXL 2003 Microphone. Is it possible to get professional recordings with this mic or should I move to something else?

Thanks.

Yes it is. The 2003 uses a Beijing 797 Audio K67-type capsule which is generally regarded as one of the best Asian copies of the Neumann K67 capsule. This mic does follow the capsule with a flat response circuit and does not impliment the HF deemphasis that was intended by Neumann to be used with the K67 capsule.

So you need to be aware that this mic has a pronounced, narrow band HF peak and you may want to consider creating a "go to" EQ curve that will accomplish the HF deemphasis the mic is not providing.

Mr J has spoken...good nuff fer me! :D
hell...maybe I'll get one now. ;)

Oh, if you don't own a 2003 the FET / transformer coupled MXL V67 has, in my opinion, an out-of-the-box timbre balance that is more appealing than the 2003.

The MXL 2003 has some capacitors that can be replaced to take the fuzzy edge off the highs. Some are even the wrong values IMO, and upping the values brings in the low end to something very nice. I replaced them with some polysryrene and polycarbonate caps and got a really nice sound from them even before I put in a really good sounding transducer. It took a kind of "veiled" sound out of the mic and produced a more up front sound in the mids.
