Hi all

Just wondered if anyone could suggest a budget condenser that works well for hi hats?

Cheers!

James

Here are a couple of suggestions

I have never used the ATM 11 as it is discontinued but I have recently used the ATM450 and found that it worked great for High-hat and it’s easy to position the mic on the kit but, you said "budget" so I don't know if 250$ dollars is within your budget. I have not used the Avant CK-1 FET pencil condenser but the frequency response for all the capsule's seem to emphasize the desired frequencies for a hi hat and it looks cool! That is a 150 dollar$ mic when you start going below this amount quality becomes questionable. Hope that helps

I don't know what your budget is, however here are my 3 suggestions of mics that I have used for Hi Hats:
For $579 you can get an AKG C451 and that is the BEST mic I've used on Hats.
For $299 you can get a Shure KSM 137 and it's a wonderful mic for Hats which I own and use daily for that task.
If you plan on spending less than $100 get an SM 57 and if placed right does the trick.
Good luck!

while i know that it doesn't fit the budget requirement i've got my shure SM7 currently parked next to a hi hat and it sounds great. i had heard that it worked and decided to try it and it was ridiculously easy to get a good sound. i've had a lot of trouble with various condensers in that application.

if you already happen to have one and have not already thought of it then it would be worth a try
