GOOD Behringer Gear

To settle once and for all that I am not either anti-Behringer or a gear snob (check my gear list for proof!) I propose that we make a list of the Behringer equipment that we have found to be 'good'. By this I don't mean 'usable, if there's no alternative', butthose things that are above average value for money and maybe which will hold their own against more expensive equipment.

There's just one or two rules:
- Don't post a recommendation if it's the only piece of that type of gear you've used. E.g. If your UB502 is your first mixer, bought on the word of an enthusiastic friend or salesman, leave it out.
- You should try to mention both specific strengths of the piece as well as specific flaws - this isn't a back-patting session or a brand-dissing one.

SO: Mixers, DIs, pres, compressors, FX, mics ... go to it, and tell us all where the gems are to be found in this rather varied pile of stones.

Quality control problems are their main issue. They might make some alright products and if you get one that works properly and doesn't take a shit within two months, great for you. For everyone that says, I own a Behringer such and such and it is great, you'll find another person that bought the same thing and it doesn't work right. That says alot to me about a company and I perfer not to throw my money away, anymore. I bought an Ultra Curve DEQ, which I would recommend, if you can find one that actually works properly.

that sounded condoleeza rice-esqe.....a whole lot of extra talk just to tell me that you like the Ultra Curve DEQ.

how do you expect to have a non partisan thread when your title gives a sarcastic tone and people like grinder throw in their two dimes and a nickel when all we wanted was 2 cents.

Yea, most of their stuff is at least usable as long as it works. How good it is isn't really the issue.

I think the Behringer Truths are legitimate monitors that compete well with others in their general price bracket; i.e. Event 20/20, KRK V8, M-Audio Studiophile, etc. etc.

Provided they work, that is. :D

The Composer Pro is a pretty usable budget compressor. Much better option than something like the Alesis 3630 or similar. Provided, again, that it works.

The headphone amps are pretty functional and seem to do their job . . . when they work.

well hell that just said it all....why not rename the thread.....GOOD Behringer Gear.....when it works

Yea, but even then, not much of it is really what most would consider "good."

Certainly not GOOD in all-caps. Maybe lower-case decent.

How about: Behringer gear that doesn't suck . . . when it works ?

so what all do you consider good that people can afford on a part time job income?

Some of M-Audio's stuff is pretty good. Particularly their sound cards and their mic pres. Monitors ain't bad, either.

Used Symetrix stuff is good, particularly their compressors (Symetrix 501, etc.) and EQ's, and can be had on a modest income. Orban is another name to look out for. Some of it is pretty old, though. And speaking of Orban, the DBX Project I Parametric EQ is one of the best values in audio, if you get lucky enough to snag one.

Rane makes good mic pres and EQ's, and most of it is pretty affordable, new or used.

Yorkville make good, affordable monitors.

Whirlwind make good, affordable DI boxes.

There's also a company you may have heard of that goes by the name FMR Audio. They make a good, affordable compressor you might have heard about.

Let's see . . . the Soundcraft E-series mixing boards sound good, although they might not be laden with features gallore. The Yamaha boards are good values, and are a sizeable step up in durability and reliability when compared to their Behringer counterparts.

As for larger consoles, I'd scour the ebay scene and be on the lookout for an older Peavey / AMR board. And no, that's not a typo. :D The AMR series were really a good board, and represent an excellent value if you can find one that pops up from time to time.

Microphones: Audio Technica, CAD, Oktava, Studio Projects. Used: Beyerdynamic, Electrovoice.

so at 700 a month to play with....you could get some good stuff...maybe i should ask for a raise and go back to living at home.

Behringer ECM8000 doesn't suck! I use a pair of them to record acoustic guitar somtimes. And they're really cheap ($40 each I believe). As a point of reference, I plug these into a Great River MP2, and I also have a Neumann KM184 and Soundelux U97, so the ECM8000s aren't the only mics I've heard!

hsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

LOL well finally some "GOOD" but i think your opinion has fallen on deaf ears

Composer (original) is good. Composer Pro (the new one) behaves rather strangely, but the Auto attack/release setting is good. A little bit noisy when pushed. Headphone splitter amps are good. These are all solid pieces of gear that are worth the dough. I've used a bunch of other Behringer and would not recommend any of it in the audio path.

I haven't tried the ECM8000s, so don't consider this a slight against them.

I've owned two pieces of Behringer gear, a mic that didn't work, right from the get go and the DEQ, which lasted 2 months. The DEQ, did work pretty well for the two months, though. Distorted, sorry to upset you with the whole story. I should have left out the part about it dying after two months, since that isn't very important. Buy Behringer, their stuff is the best! Happy now? :D

Most of what I just mentioned is right in the same ballpark, pricewise, as similar Behringer gear.

Some of it is even cheaper.

Most of it is significantly better and more reliable, even when bought used. So you can't use the price excuse. Forget it.

I didn't start this thread sarcastically. I wanted to know if people had Behringer stuff they felt held up well against other stuff, rather than the somewhat ignorant (and incorrect) mantra, "it's the cheapest so it's fine". I also wanted to know if their compressors were really ok because I might buy one with my leftover from my rent.

Distortedrumble - I'm a student, I live off a loan which I have to pay back with big interest in years to come. My money has to count, and my experiences are that Behringer stuff does not always go the distance in proving to be a worthwhile investment. I'm not interested in disposable gear because I can't buy twice.

Don't think I'm trying to make some point here that I'm not!

Here's my experience with a Behringer compressor.

Bought a quad compressor to use in my home entertainment setup. Worked fine for 6 months, then the power supply failed. Sent it to a factory authorized repair facility, and got it back within a week. Then, after about another month, channels 1 and 2 went dead. At that point, I just said what the fuck, and now just use it for the DVD player on channels 3 and 4.

Roll the dice and take your chances! :D

I have used a number of Behringer mixers and all have performed without any problems. I have a MX602A in my rack. We also have used their MX1604A unit. I have also used some of their other higher grade units as well with good results.

I have an FCB1010 floor controller for my guitar setup, and it's the single most useful device I have. Nothing else comes close to what it can do.
