Now that macs run pc software they really have a big appeal to EVERYONE I think. But I have one basic question will a 1300 dollar mac be as fast as a 1300 dollar pc laptop? I think the answer is no. I feel like in order to get a fast enough mac laptop you need to spend around 1500-2000 dollars.

Can anyone steer me in a direction I am going to be doing heavy recording on this laptop and taking it with me while studying music so I may need to load other large programs on the2re. I want it to be able to keep up with all VSTi's I have and VST effects.

Thanks
Dave

PS - At first I was dead set on a pc until someone told my mom to get a mac they are better for recording and art based things which is what people say. And I know how to use a mac becuase ive uesd one at school soo its not like I dont know my way around a mac. Thats all.

Unless you're running Vista, don't worry too much about having enough horsepower. I have a Toshiba 1.2GHz Celeron laptop with a half-gig of memory running WinXP that I paid about $750 bucks for about three years ago, and it runs all my portable multitrack audio and video production needs just fine, including Sony Vegas and Steinberg Nuendo.

lol $750 bucks for a 1.2ghz..
I can't believe we actually paid that much for those specs back then. Most newer systems, meet the requirements to be able to setup & run a daw. notebooks & desktops alike. Of course, the more money you spend, the better spec's it should have. I spent 1300 on my notebook (Toshiba), and it's decent speed, but not as fast as the equivalent mac. $1,300 got me a 1.7ghz c2d 2gb ddr2 667, 200gb sata drive, and lil extra features like finger print reader, and a nice sized screen, dvdrw etc. The same priced model in the mac world would be 2.16ghz, 1gb ram, 120gb drive - except smaller screen at $1,295

Most new computers come with vista why do I have to worry if i get a new pc adn it has vista?

I chekced out the macs and they give u like a 200 dollar discount and a free ipod when a college kid buys a new computer. I kinda like them the only flaw was no pc apps but that is nott an issue any more. They seem to be faster then msot pcs they have duos and 2.16 ghz the ones im looking at. Im deciding if I should bump up the 1 gb of ram to 2 gb of ram.

What do you guys think?

Yeah I would bump it to 2gb.

Reason for Vista, is because not everything is supporting it just yet. On top of that, the ones that do, most have faulty/flaky drivers.

"Back then"? LOL, that's yesterday. And that was actually a deal on a disco'd model that went for about a grand a month before I bought it. Actually that's the first computer since my original Trash-80 that I actually paid less than two grand for. There was the TRS-80/4P, the 286/12, the Pentium/60, the PPro/200, the PIII/450 and morst recently, the P4HT/3.2G. All of which cost right around 2 grand a piece. What a waste.

The great news is that nowdays there absolutely no reason to spend anywhere near half that...unless your stuck with Vista, which is such a bloated hog of an OS that it needs a good GHz of CPU and a GB of memory just to keep the PC afloat, before you even run your apps. Stick with XP for as long as you can, and save the expense on extra CPU cycles and memory (or Apple premiums) for some nice dorm room acoustics and a decent microphone :).

I would have to vote for the mac for school, but if the truth be said, I think your nuts.

Notebooks grow legs. I'd just get a cheap desktop for my room and a high quality digital voice recorder were I you.
