GM with M-Audio Audiophile 2496

I was wondering what the quality of General MIDI sounds is like on this sound card. Does anyone have a sample or something that I can listen to?

Or: Does anyone know a sound card with really good sounding GM? Or is it just the nicer the card, the better all the sounds in general?

Unlike Creative's SBLive! or Audigy, Audiophile 2496 doesn't have MIDI engine on it. What you hear when playing MIDI files through Audiophile 2496 most likely is softsynth. In this case, the quality of the sound deppends on the softsynth, not the card itself. Some softsynth like Edirol and Yamaha shiped a very good GM softsynth.
Tought not the best ones for audio work, most Creative's cards have internal MIDI engine. It uses re-loadable soundfonts. So, no need to install softsynth to hear MIDI through your soundcard. There's alot of GM soundfonts file over net, from tiny kb to huge Mb ones. Their quality is off course vary.
