Hello. I was wondering for a GLS ES-57 microphone would I need a power supply and preamp? Do I need the popular Blue Microphones Icicle Converter Preamp or would a simple XLR to USB converter be sufficient?

Assuming from the "57" that this is a knockoff of the Shure SM57, this would be a dynamic mic and would not require phantom power - if that's what you mean by "power supply". All mics need preamplification, but how you do this depends on what you're trying to achieve.

Generally the advice is against plugging mics directly into your computer via the device you mention unless you're doing stuff that has a low quality requirement - ie. podcast etc...

Tell us more about what you're trying to record...

Hi. Thank you for the reply. I am trying to record the Yamaha YPG 535. I went ahead and ordered the Icicle XLR to USB converter along with the dynamic mic. The output is a bit lower than I would like it to be, but that maybe just the placement. Other then that it seems to be working fine. If you have any pointers on recording keyboards, would be highly appreciated. :D

edit:

As I pointed out earlier I am entirely new to this.. So any advice or links regarding this would be helpful. Right now with my current setup I can hear my fingers as I play the keyboard. It is subtle but audible.

Read the stickys at the top of this forum about computer recording. What you want to get is a proper audio interface.
