Glass table?

So I finally got to my senses and ordered a pair of nearfield monitors and I decided to rearrange my modest setup in order to place them in the center along the shortest wall in the room. Here is the setup thus far:

Now, I realised I have this glass table in the livingroom I never use as I'm living here by myself:

Will this have negative acoustic properties?

What I was thinking is kind of like this, and excuse my not-so-skilled drawing skills:

The green is supposed to be the glass table and the exceptionally well drawn monitors. I can fit the other stuff under it with the computer on top of it centered. I figure I will have room for the monitors on the table but am thinking about finding something to raise them a little bit and perhaps put them on a couple of mouse pads so they don't vibrate and resonate as much with the glass material.

Also I have this rug in my livingroom, will it do any good?

Hey Dainbramage,
What monitors did you get?

Some of them have switches to compensate for half space and quarter space. (That's against a wall or in a corner).

I'm not sure that a rug will make much difference. Just gauge that yourself. If the room is really really bright like a tiled bathroom, I suppose it would do no harm.

You're right about getting them up to head height. That's one of the most important things.
I just used some old polystyrene bats to raise mine up.

I suppose even just the fact that you're making your setup symmetrical should help a lot.
There's nothing more off putting than working in a corner, but not symmetrically.

It's hard to tell from the photos but it looks like you have good open walls at the first reflection points.
That's your immediate left and right as you sit down (more or less).
If you can get a few panels of rigid fibreboard or something up there you'd probably see a big difference.

I don't have good wall space for that, but I have some mobile fold up ones that I bring out for important work.
It's night and day!

Mine were pretty cheap to make. The only hard part was finding somewhere that'd sell a small amount because it's sold as bulk building material.

What monitors did you get?

I got a pair of Sonodyne SM100ak used for about half the original price. They should arrive today or tomorrow. I never had monitors before so I guess I should listen to commercial music for hours on end through them right? Anyway I am really excited about hopefully being able to mix a bit more properly and be better at adding feedback to the mp3 mixing clinic.

Unfortunately the walls aren't as open as they look, since the one to the right is concrete (I live in a basement apartment) but I suppose the wood on top of it helps a bit? I'm not exactly sure what you mean by gauging the rug I guess since english is not my first language, but I suppose you mean to try it out to see if it makes a difference?

As for fibreboard I will look into that at a later point as I just spent most of my not-so-much money on the monitors :D

Thanks for your input man.

Oh, Sorry. I didn't realise English wasn't your first language.

By open walls I just mean walls with space to put panels on.

And about the rug, yeah, I just meant try and and see what you think. :)

Ah, I figured you meant open in terms of acoustic properties. I will try the rug, I guess it looks nice in the living room but I rarely find myself in that space anyway :D Besides, who needs nice?

Your plan should be a step forward definitely. Acoustic symmetry is important!

With all that wood though, you'll still have a lot of flutter echo in the higher range (and bass problems down lower as all rooms do). The rug might help with some flutter echo, but acoustic treatment will give you vast improvements in the room as well as your new set up.

Well the monitors didn't arrive today but hopefully tomorrow, so I will see what it sounds like. There is just no way I can afford acoustic treatment at this point, but at some point I plan to get one of these two packages:

Primacoustic Acoustic Solutions

Studio Applications (Studiopac 10 can be seen in the table)

The latter one is the most expensive.

But again, will the glass table be problematic?

I will gauge (hey I learned a new word) the rug tomorrow or the day after and post new pictures if there is any interest in that.

If the glass table doesn't rattle, it should be fine for your use. As GIK pointed out, you'll have bigger worries with the wood walls.

You might try to find something to rest the mointors on to help separate them from the table. Dense packing foam, maybe.

get a thick blanket or piece of carpet or something to set on the table .... even a thick table cloth to calm down the direct reflection off the glass.

For treatment, look for treating the corners for bass buildup and early reflection points to limit phasing and other comb filtering effects at the listening position. Lots of more info on room treatment can be found on our website. Our treatment primer goes over a lot of the basics, and also about general set up and positioning in a room: Room Acoustics Primer - GIK Acoustics

So the monitors have arrived in all their glory! After a hard days work I rearranged everything, and connected the monitors and I was so excited.

Here it is, doesn't look too bad!

I was ready for a virgin listen to the speakers and....... THEY DON'T FUCKING WORK! There were some treble from the tweeters, but the woofers are not working.

Turns out the magnets are loose in both of them and I swear to god I don't get mad easily but this is fucking pissing me off. Holidays are coming tomorrow and I had ordered them just in time. Now I have to send them back, and I ordered new ones from a shop just because I am fucking getting these no matter what.

Edit: Well, I guess I'll go get the rug.

magnets loose?!?!!

Are you sure? That's a pretty unusual fault in a driver. In fact ..... I'm not sure I've ever seen a speaker with a loose magnet.

They must have been dropped hard to do that.

I am pretty sure. There is a huge part loose inside both speakers. I mean they are totally bouncing around freely in there. The speakers were at a postterminal for like 4 days and I suspect something might have happened there.

Anyway I will send them back and get a refund. This is not the first time I've experienced bad things from buying used stuff, it's like a lottery every time.
