I've never understood why some think its easier to learn a hardware recorder than a computer. At least with a computer every second person has one, and if its a software problem you can post screen shots etc on the net.
Especially with so many great plugin's out there, I think you'd be crazy to go with hardware recording.
I think a combination of hardware and software is good, but these days it would be flat out dumb to throw the whole PC recording thing out the window completely. There's a hell of a lot of versatility there, and with freeware you can build and build on your setup at little or no cost.
For a lot of people it comes down to how tech savvy you are though. With software recording, having a higher than amateur level of computer expertise makes things move a whole better. Knowing a bit about how computers work will go a long way to helping someone get a good recording setup for their PC, and will elp them optimise it accordingly. Whereas there are those who don't have that kind of aptitude (not casting any aspertions about anyone here at all), and get on better with learning the ins and outs of a purpose built box that it already optimised for it's specific purpose, rather than the ins and outs of PC's, which have a lot of different applications
