Gibson Guitar gets Fiji wood deal

Gibson Guitar
The Prime Minister of Fiji will visit Gibson Wednesday to celebrate the new Fiji/Gibson partnership for sustainable mahogany wood! (Press conference at 2:45 p.m. CST).

Great news. Personally, I support the raids on Gibson, for violating laws on the books- this is a positive result of that pressure.

BUT the PM of Fiji is a PM of a martial state and one that supresses the media & kicks any non Fijian media workers out of the country.
Sustainable mahogany from a country that won't allow it's native born but "of Indian heritage" citizens any power, suppresses free speech, won't allow democratic elections etc etc etc suggests that the likelihood of the mahogany actually being sustainably harvested & the forests maintained is not good. makes for good healing headlies for Gobson though as it's unlikely that many folk on Continental American will be up to speed with Fijian politics.

You do know this is a guitar and bass board don't you? The political discussions are still in the cave sadly. Try there.:)

The point of the OP was that Gibson had found a "sustainable" mahogany source after being busted for using "illegally" secured stock. My response is that it "may" be sustainable but also comes from a country under illegal military rule so that would seem to nullify the tick for sustainability with a cross for supporting totalitarianism.
I don't think I need to go to the cave to say that given the original post.

Good info Ray - all we hear about Fiji is that Superstars have vacation homes there and it's like a romantic magical place to take a holiday (my wife talks about us going there a lot). Sounds like it's more a corrupt place looking for some bucks and will burn through the wood supply unitl it's gone.... Shame as this was encouraging news originally...
Maybe I should start a rosewood grow-op in my basement... :D
