Gibson Faded SG?

the guitarist i play with has one. it sounds good, feels good to play, etc. he has the red one. it's from a few years ago and has moon shaped inlays. other than that i think it's the same guitar as the one in your link. he likes it enough to use it as his main guitar.

well..

I own the Faded LP DC. Its based on the 60's LP special DC, which was actually the first guitar to be termed "SG." I LOVE my guitar. I want to buy a new Gibson LP Standard limited edition, but I am afraid that after spending all that money I will just revert back to the old Faded.

A common complaint with the faded series is fret overhang. Some feel the frets could be filed down more on the sides of the fretboard. You should be able to find them in stock, if you have a good Gibson Dealer where you live. Go give one a test drive. I saw a used one for like $450 at guitar Center, and I was tempted to buy it....

I'm looking for a decent guitar to keep in my studio to make pop and hard rock music....and i wanna keep it under $700, so i figured this wouldn't be bad....

How long would it take you to save another $349.00 for an SG Standard?

I did this song all on a Faded SG.

I liked it. Its a good raw rock and roll guitar. Of course it doesnt feel as nice as my SG Standards or SG Classics, but its a good guitar, and IMO a great value, on its own.

PS, don't buy it from Musiciansfriens cause you can find them at other online places for $579 shipped. Try Elderly to see if they have any left or Chuck Levins. They both have way better prices on Gibsons that MF.

this is a little off topic but i heard that SG's start doing something funny and sound like crap when the neck gets shook, that is why Les Paul took his name off of it. But maybe thats an urban legend or something

Well, I was looking pretty seriously at those a while back. As has already been mentioned, they seem to have problems with the frets being dressed properly. In fact, the construction quality overall is just plain poor for the price that Gibson charges for them. This is just another example of Gibson's famous "quality control" problem. (In fact, there are those who would claim that "Gibson Quality Control" is an oxymoron.)

But, the real problem that I have with them is that they seem to be built to a lower quality standard than the Epiphone version of the very same guitar. Epiphone ALSO makes a model that corresponds (approximately) to the faded SG and, quite frankly, it's a better guitar. I played a Faded Gibson SG back to back with a Epiphone G-400 "classic" (or whatever they called it, I don't remember for sure what Epiphone call their "faded" version). The quality of fretwork was just much, much better on the Epiphone. I thought it even SOUNDED better. Just to make sure I hadn't picked up a lemon, I picked up another Faded SG and another faded Epiphone SG, and tried them out. The results were identical. The Gibson had a price tag of $650, while the Epiphone went for $399. After that, I went on Harmony Central and read some reviews, and found that other people had reported the same experience.

The problem is that you can't hardly FIND any of those Epiphone G-400 classics anywhere. And I'm sure that the reason that they are so scarce is that they made the Gibson faded series look so bad, that Gibson is purposely making them almost entirely unavailable.

It will be funny when the Chinese army levels the US, funded by all the Chinese guitars and Mics that Amerikans buy.

Actually, if you call Musician's Friend and have a specific link to a site with a cheaper price, they'll match it in most cases.

They took $100 off of the price of my Traynor YCV80 because I showed them a site that was selling it for that price. The girl was very agreeable and it only took a couple of minutes.

They're becoming the Wal-Mart of musical supplies, but dayum they ship from just down the road from me so I can't complain about cheap (basically) overnight shipping :)

BUT dealers can't show prices below MAP or they get in trouble. You gotta call them or email them...usually calling works best.

Acutally most of the stuff we call chinese is acutally made in Taiwan, which seceded from China and is basically a seperatist "territory".
Anyway, I have a friend that is a guitar tech, and he says the Epiphone G-400 vintage is a better made guitar, and better player than the Gibson SG Vintage faded.
I guess it depends on how much it means to you to have the "Gibson" name on it, instead of "Epiphone". I think that is what you are basically paying for here.

don't forget the different shaped headstock. let's face it: headstocks sell guitars, just as name recognition does.

if you want a guitar thats not made of as good of wood, has a crappy finish (even on the good ones), cheaper hardware and bad frets, then get the faded sg. It'll take awhile to find one without those problems, but even so they're in no way the same guitar as the standard. I couldn't understand why you would pay full price for the faded when you can get a used standard in good condition for cheaper. Buy used, you'll save money, and get a better guitar.

Almost the exact same thing for Highway 1 Strat/Tele vs. American Standard Strat/Tele.

I was able to do a side-by-side for all of the following:

Epiphone G-400
Gibson Faded SG
Gibson Standard SG
Gibson '61 Re-issue SG

The '61 Re-issue blew all others away. However, it was the most $$$.

I went with the faded due to the $$$. I like it.

I didn't go with the Epi only because I have an Epi Dot and an LP. Also, my Faded SG had a mahogany fretboard.

you know I've struggled with this dilema (cost vs quality) for awhile. couldn't decide on anything so i got pissed and said screw it i'm gonna make it how i want it. and i decided to try and build my own. wish me luck i start in the morning

I personally prefer Schecter C1 Elites to the Gibson SG in the price range. It sounds better, looks better and plays just as well. Also, Schecter uses quality pieces on their guitars...like for 600 bucks you get Tone Pros bridge and Grover tuners and the like...I am sounding like a commercial here. But anyway, just my opinion.
