I'm pretty sure the Gibson SG's are better made guitars than the Epiphone SG's but are the Epiphones good for the price?

I'm interested in getting an SG or maybe a Les Paul but I'm confused to how much better the Gibson's are.

I've also seen the SG Special go around, are those any good?

i hear that the epi's don't like to stay in tune with the stock tuners. they're easily changeable though.

if you're worried about price, try ebay. or watch your local newspaper or whatever.........i almost bought a 95 gibson sg for 600 bucks about a month ago from some guy advertising in the paper. i've been watching ebay for a while and they go from 600 to 800 on ebay.

or you can get an sg deluxe. those oly got for like 500 to 600 on ebay. i'm talking about the deluxe from jsut a couple years ago though.......it has the maestro bridge and 3 pickups.

there's one on ebay right now for 599.00

i bought a '95 white gibson SG (black pickguard, ebony fretboard, dot inlays) for $300 a couple of months ago from a music store. I've been gigin' with it and it seems like a really good guitar...sounds good, stays in tune, and the action can be adjusted extreamly low with no fret buzz...I love how the ebony fretboard feels (plus it looks really cool on the white guitar). So there are deals out there to be had.

Im not crazy about the Epi SG"s. I saw one in another music store, brand new, and they were asking $500. I played in and thought to myself "these fuckers are crazy". It played and sounded like alot cheaper guitar than the gibson.

I would say go for a used gibson too. Let someone else drive it off the lot and take the "new to used" loss.

Yea, buy a Gibson. I have a supreme with '57 hums in it. Awsome axe and the favorite, in my collection. It has 24 frets and you can't believe the difference those 2 frets make. It's intonation is dead on, all the way up.

Spend the extra money for the higher quality. It is worth it.

We need to have a permanent sticky at the top of the this forum dircting people to the search section at the bottom. There is already about 20 pages of Mexican swag VS American.

I own an SG Supreme and a $179 Epi SG special. and I like them both. I replaced the classic 57 humbuckers on the supreme with Seymour Duncan SH4 and SH14 with coil taps, and dropped the humbuckers right into the Epiphone, with very good results. For some songs, I really prefer the shorter neck on the Epi. I have short arms, and when I have to play a half bar B flat on the supreme, it's one hell of a reach. The frets on the supreme are more squared off, with better sustain, but they can also cut my fingers playing The Who.
I would say, though, cheap guitars require more hunting to find a good one. I probably went through 15 Epi SG's, before I found this one.-Richie

Epi's are not Mexican.

Bottom line:

Epis are NOT as good as Gibsons. NOT even CLOSE to as good.

HOWEVER:

People will battle until the end of time with the "bang-for-buck" argument. Play an Epi. If it sounds good, plays good, seems good TO YOU; and still does after you play the Gibson, then the Epi will do the trick. But know, the Epi is "inferior" in every department. Cheaper wood, cheaper electronics, and less (oh god how can it be worse) quality control, among many other things.

It doens't matter what any of us say. Trust your ears, and your fingers.

Aren't you a stickler for details.

Speaking of details......

You girlfriend was going down on me and she did this thing where she took her tonsil and..........

Oh, sorry......

I went the Gibson route and bought the SG Special. I was very disappointed with it and I ended up sending it back. I tried to get happy with it because I dreaded having to send it back especially at my expense, but couldn't. I decided to spend the extra $150 and bought the Epiphone SG Elite. Now we're talikin'! Nice feel, sound, finish etc. etc. :)

ahem. ahem.

don't think i was actually trying to "insult" you, or your intelligence.

you did that on your own, by posting a condescending message that was blatantly wrong.

i was just setting the record straight for people reading this thread that might not know that epiphones are not made in mexico.

that, and, whatever wise-ass reply you might post is just going to make you look worse.
