getting that "at a "march/protest" speakerphone sound"..

We can't read your post but judging from the topic the answer is probably cut the lows and highs, add some distortion and a few touches of feedback with a generous slap back delay.
 
I have also read that if you are using a tube mic-pre, and the tube is going out, that it can cause that type of sound in it. Just another thought.

Even a rolled up paper like the old time megaphones will help to capture that type of sound.
 
I agree with Tex, also boost your mids by about 5-6 db and sweep for the frequency that sounds the best.A little bit of multi band compression will help too,but only boost the mids,good luck - Matt
