OK, I'm finally starting to get things together for a praise CD... Here's the first one I want to run by you...

It's called Jesus, Lover Of My Soul... (Can't remember the name of the original artist)... I'm the whole rhythm section (drums, bass, keys, guitars, percussion) and both vocal parts (they are scratch tracks, I think I want to redo them... ) The horns are Kevin Clark on trumpets and Jen Mazzioti on saxes. I'm really happy with the rhythm and horn parts, I think it just needs a bit of fine tuning in the mix, and perhaps a better singer. :o

Thoughts?

Nice arrangement. Very crisp. Everything seems nice and tight. I think you're in the zone.

Don

(Are you asking for volunteers? :D)

Very nice. Interesting style, smooth jazz christian? ;) Its nice and clean, not much to nit here. Well done. :)

HAHAHA! Maybe, yeah! Certainly, my "signature" stype is splattered all over the rhythm arrangement... :)

Thanks Don, I can always count on you checking in... :)

Volunteers for what? Smooth Jazz Praise arranging lessons? :D :D
(No, I know you meant singers, and no, I gotta do these myself, I have to make myself get better and stop making excuses...) :)

I was thinking the same thing - smooth Christian genre - someone beat me to the punch!

The arrangement and performance are great. The only thing it needs is a more polished vocal performance. The singer(s) sound a little timid.

Yep, dat be me, in all of my self-conscious and poorly-supported glory. :) I'm primarily an instrumentalist, as you've doubtless gathered... :) I have more to post with someone else singing... Tomorrow, perhaps. Thanks!!

I like the arrangement a lot. Everything's nice and tight. The trumpet and sax parts are super. What dynamics! I think you're almost there with the vocal. Personally, I'd like to hear the cymbals a little more.

Thanks Gerry and Tim!

Tim, wish I had control at that level, but it's my V-Stage kit; no individual drum sends, just the stereo mix. Adding edge made the whole kit harsh... :)

I'll keep working the vox!

Dude....I fianlly got to hear this.

Man, you know...when I hear you compliment anything I do, it makes me feel good...then I hear your recordings, and I tell myslef that you're just being generous, because your recordings are in such a different league.
I have no nits on this, but my only "production" suggestion would be to double the lead vocal with a female voice an octave higher...I almost NEED to hear that.

This is very "Chicago meets Earth and Wind and Fire". But the vocal track needs somethig to excite the earlobe.

You blow me away.

Have always loved this song, never heard it jazzed up...I really like it! :)

You're right on target, there is supposed to be an octave up lead part, and third harmony part above the 2 parts that are there! The horns are very "No Tell Lover" - era Chicago; but I didn't write em, I just recorded em... The rhythm section is what came out of my head. But I'll tell ya, I worked harder to get this one right than anything I've ever done musically.

Vocally, we're still in beta, as you obviously heard. :)

Thank you very much. I don't give you idle compliments; you are a truly stunning and inspirational player, and you have my utmost respect; I envy much if not all of your ability. (especially the part where you're not too tightly would and I am!) It would be really really cool to collaborate with you on something. Your drums, my bass, your guitars, my keys, your power, my arranging sensibilities, your funk, my jazz/pop, whew. Could be great.

Well thanks Mike! Much appreciated! I actually learned the tune from a lead sheet having never heard it; I didn't hear the original until I'd already done this rhythm arrangement. Imagine my surprise! But, the original is indeed lovely, and has the upper vocal parts Rami mentioned it needed!

Yeah the mix sounds very nice. Drums and horns sound fantastic. I agree with whoever said the vocals sound a little "timid". They're not bad at all, it just seems they need to be sung with a little more oomph. I think the harmonies are overall pretty good, but theres a few out-of-pitch spots here and there. All in all though, it sounds very polished and professional. Good job. :)

If I was going to cover another P/W song for my CD it would have been this one.

I did "Lord I lift Your Name On High". I didn't do as well as this. Very nice. Even the singing is nice, but the comments are right: you need to let loose and not worry about it.

Thank you, all! If only I weren't so tightly wound about it. :) It's hard when you're not confident about your lead voice; especially in the intimacy and clarity of the recording environment... I do plan to recut them...

not my style of music, but a great recording nonetheless. I dont think you are far off on the vox but I agree with RAMI, a nice female voice an octave higher makes this tune :)
