Hi, my home studio works fine with audio and midi so far but when I plug in my old yamaha drum programer with midi in and out I get the signal in but no out? home studio has drum samples with it but would like to get some stuff off my drum machine too. Where do I start? thanks

Did you plug the audio outs from your drum machine into your sound card?

Carl

so you have to have both? I did try just the audio out L mono and got the signal but when I went to record didn't work.

Audio and MIDI are mutually exclusive. MIDI isn't audio and audio isn't MIDI.

MIDI is just data that tells things to do stuff.

Since you said you want to use your drum sounds from your Yamaha programmer and expected this to work with just MIDI hooked up I saw your problem immediately.

Just remember, MIDI is for events only. Events like "B flat above middle C is struck at this velocity for this duration".

As for recording the audio you did send, you'll have to provide more info.

o.k. here is some more information on how I'm hooked up which may help you with my problem. I have a tascam us122 interface unit that I'm pluging in my midi and audio inputs. the usb cord going from that to the computer is how the signals are getting into the computer. I have my audio out from the tascam going to my sterio system for playback sound. I also have a rca plugged into my sound card going to my sterio system too. I can play, record audio through the tascam and playback, I can also plug my keyboard using midi in and outs to the tascam, record, and playback also. doing the same hook up with the midi cables to the drum machine only get the midi in signal on the tascam but the light for midi out is not on which means no out signal. hope this helps.

Your drum machine is probably recieving on channel 10. I'll bet your card is sending to channel 1 only.

You could either configure your card to send on all 16 channels or just channels 10 and 1.

o.k. will do. so where do I find the card settings to change it. on the home studio or the computer settings. I know on the midi tracks 1-16 I can set up to record on track 10 if that is what you mean.

Tracks and channels, like MIDI and audio are two different animals.

There must be a place in your software for MIDI setup or MIDI preferences. You need to assign the output to channel 10 or give it an "send all" setting.

Carl

o.k. that makes sense. will do that when I get home today then. thanks and will let you know back if that worked.

hi got home and tried the channel 10 thing but no luck on getting a signal yet. I had the midi cables in to out and out to in from the drum machine to the tascam interface and had the 1/4 jack from the guitar L input to the drum machine audio L mono output. now someone just suggested to also have an audio out cable from the drum machine to the in on the computer sound card too.

hey never mind my ignorange. I found that I had for audio tascam in but the out was still on my computer soundcard out. with a tascam unit with a usb you have to designate the out to tascam out for the playback on the trackview/console. after that was accomplished i got the loop to work and worked on a guitar part for it tonight. great stuff. the bass sounds awhsome too. anyway thanks for your help. will be back with more questions I'm sure. :)
