If you write a great song with a particular artist in mind....is it possible to get the song to that artist? How do you do it?

When you find out, please let all of the rest of us know ;)

Perhaps

There are ways to do it........ do some research and get the guys personal address and write him a letter. Make short and sweet. Explain what you want and enclose a self addressed postage paid post card... all he has to do is drop it in the mail. Then, if you get the post card back, you send the tune. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

Kris Kristofferson used to send tapes to Johnny Cash repeatedly. Cash used to just throw 'em into the lake behind his house. Kristofferson even went as far as landing a helicopter on Cash's property, walking up to Cash, and handing him a tape. Johnny's wife eventually convinced him to listen.

I hand it to them!

Last year, a member of HR wrote a song that I liked. I am a pro violinist, I back up famous people for a living. I thought the song would be good for Michael MacDonald, and I happened to be playing with him, so I went up and handed a cd I burned to him.

The bigger question:

How do you get backstage?

Usually, artists do a meet-and-greet before a show. Most of the people who are invited are in fan clubs or win something off the radio.

Dont give your tape to a manager, it will be in the trash in twenty seconds.

If you get to meet the artist:

Lie. Lie a lot. You cant say " Hi, I am Ted, I am a truck driver from Portland, here is my song". Say "Hi, I am Ted, the songwriter. I have been shopping this around, you would be great for this. Stevie Nicks has expressed a lot of interest, I think you would be perfect for it. Stevie's voice is a little too yada yada..."

Sure, the artist might know that you are a phony, but who cares? If he/she listens to the song, you have done good.

Also, check out the artist's web site, and sign the guestbook. Trust me, they read them. Put an mp3 of the tune on Nowhere Radio, and write " Dear artist, I came across this song written by Ted, which would be perfect for you. I hear that Stevie Nicks is interested in doing it, but I think it would be better suited for you".

There is a lot of BS in the Music Biz, trust me. People play dirty, so get used to it.

The main thing is attitude. If you are star-struck by the artist, this is bad. If you act like your booty dont stink, the artist might take you seriously. There are not many shy people in the biz, and people throw names around a lot. If you dont know anybody, make up stuff. " I was in town, thought I would check out your gig", etc. Saying " Mr. artist, I am a huge fan. Would you please, please" is a death sentence.
