Winner chicken dinner!
Is It Possible To Hook Up A Better Converter To The Firepod? What If I Just Got One With 2 Channels Since I Won't Be Using More Than 2 Except For Drums? Is It Possible To Only Make 2 Of The 8 Channels Have Good A/d/a? How Would I Do This? How Much Is It For An Awesome 2 Channel A/d/a?

The only way I can think of, is to get a good preamp and find an a/d converter to go from the pre to an SPDIF output, then attach that to the firepod's SPDIF ins. Good luck with that.

I've looked into upgrading in this area and the price tags on those high end converters isn't pretty. Also a lot of them just do one or the other (A-D or D-A). A couple of decent channels of A-D coversion from Apogee will cost about $2000.

You can pay more, Lavry, Prism etc.

oh wow, i got a negative feedback making this thread!!!!!

"bad idea" with no signature....????? Sorry for asking question!!!!!

Yeah i was thinking of going to motu or rme but could i at some point use better converters with those?

I guess the real question is.....how to hook up a converter.

current application....."bedroom/living room studio". I don't plan on nor do i have money for upgrading right now. But i want know for future reference.

again though.....negative rep????

Ahhh, but of course my response would be, what do you want to hook it up to?

Here's a VERY basic breakdown of the typical connection types. I'll just cover digital, since the Analog side should be obvious:

S/PDIF:
2-channels, up to 96k 24-bit (optical - toslink)
2-channels, up to 192k 24-bit (coaxial - rca)

ADAT:
8-channels, up to 48k, 24-bit
smux II adat (2 ports) for 88 & 96k
smux IV adat (4 ports) for 176 & 192k
optical

AES/EBU:
8-channels, up to 192k, 24bit
single and double wide
xlr

Wordclock:
for synching multiple digital devices
BNC

Now, if you want to get this digital audio into a computer, there are 3 basic ways: pci card, firewire and usb. RME, Lynx and Frontier make some great pci digital interface cards. I'm not familiar with any usb or firewire boxes that strictly do interfacing. Of course, most of these types of devices do more than interface, they also do conversion, ala the firepod.

I should also add something else to consider... if you are going to go for the hi-end converters, you will also need to evaluate the final links of the chain at either end. Are your pre's and mics as world-class as your converters? If not, you are going to hear it. But then again, maybe not - is your monitoring chain hi-end as well (amps, monitoring speakers, etc)? What about your listening environment? Is your room acoustically in optimal shape (bass traps, diffusion, etc)?

The money starts to add up quickly as you move back and forth along the audio chain trying to balance the quality of one to the other :)

for mics i have Soundelux u195, MD421, 57, studio projects C1 pair

preamps i have Chandler TG2, M-audio DMP3

so i have some decent to awesome stuff on that end. Still need to upgrade monitors, get some more drum mics, and better overheads.

The Firepod has SPDIF ins and outs.
